For over 10 years, Reviewed.com has put thousands of products to the test, all for the sake of the informed purchase and love of human progress. Here’s what we’ve been up to this week.
Following up the excellent NEX-5N, Sony’s new NEX-5R takes everything we loved about its predecessor, improves the autofocus and handling, and adds… downloadable apps? That last bit is more of a distraction than a bonus feature, but otherwise, this is a great mid-range system camera for casual photographers who demand excellent image quality.
The ongoing technology war between Google and Apple has ventured into tablet territory of late. The Nexus 10, the latest salvo from Google, will probably land a solid blow to the Apple iPad’s control of the market share, as it does a lot of stuff right and is cheaper than the latest iPad. Headline features include a super high-res screen with great pixel density, the latest and greatest version of the Android operating system, and—listen up, Apple!—Google Maps. And considering this is Google’s first full-sized tablet, we expect quick improvements.
The HDR-AS15 is Sony’s first foray into the wearable camcorder. Coming several years after the first action cams, it’s not exactly an earth-shattering release. We’ve seen most of its features before, from the likes of GoPro and Contour. It’s still a strong first effort from Sony, with good WiFi functions, cool slow-motion options, and an intuitive menu system.
Trying to keep the tablet world from becoming a two-party system, Amazon released the new Kindle Fire HD. Reasonably priced at $199, this is a tablet of the people, but we weren’t particularly impressed by some of the features. While we liked the screen, we didn’t like the re-skin of the Android 4.0.3 operating system and the fact that Amazon Prime membership is practically compulsory. But despite the performance issues, it’s great to see all these companies constantly improving products as they jockey for customers.
