Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO Headphones Review

By Mark Brezinski

The DT 990 PRO headphones are a set of open-backed over-ears from Beyerdynamic. Open-backed headphones don't have a solid layer of plastic covering the outside of the ear cups. This featurewill give your music an open, airy quality, more like you have a set of speakers near your ears than closed-off chambers of sound. The downside to open backs is poor isolation and leakage control. If you're looking for headphones to use on the go, the DT 990 PROs aren't for you. The DT 990 PROs are well-suited for a quiet indoor location, however. They have a long, coiled cord and also come with a screw-on 1/4-inch adapter, which is perfect for hooking up your amp or stereo.

The DT 990 PROs are currently available for about $260.

Performance  (read the full lab performance results at HeadphoneInfo.com)
The DT 990 PROs had great performance results, barring the poor isolation and leakage caused by its open-backed design. They had an incredibly even frequency response, which will be great for purists who don't want their headphones adding their own emphasis to playback. If you like a bass boost or a dynamic sound to your headphones, the DT 990 PROs won't be for you. Another feature that will please audiophiles is the remarkably low distortion. The DT 990 PROs also had even tracking, meaning each ear cup played frequencies at the same level. Those who like their headphones loud will also be happy with these headphones, as they were able to output high decibel levels without showing too much distortion. Again, they didn't perform as well on our isolation or leakage tests, which means these headphones are best used in a somewhat quiet, somewhat private space: these aren't headphones to take on the morning commute or public library.

Comparisons  (read more in-depth comparisons at HeadphoneInfo.com)
While the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PROs will be out of the price range for many consumers, they're a decent value. They provide excellent sound quality (augmented by their open backs), are comfortable to wear, are durable, and look nice as well. If you want a great set of headphones for home use, the DT 990 PROs are an excellent choice.
