HP Photosmart D7460 Review

The HP PhotoSmart D7460 is an inkjet printer that offers Wi-Fi, HP’s recently-launched long-lasting Vivera ink, and touch screen menu navigation. The Wi-Fi capability means any equipped PC or Mac can print to it without wires attaching the two. While the printer’s on-unit navigation makes it easy to use, the HP D7460 sometimes sways from moderate to questionable performance on speed and color accuracy. The HP PhotoSmart D7460 retails for $124.99.

The HP D7460 is dicey in terms of print speed and quality. Handling large files isn't this printer’s greatest accomplishment. In fact, it takes the HP D7460 up to 10 minutes to print five large-file 4 x 6 photographs. However, it does stay on par with other printers in its class when printing small file photos no matter what the size, from 4 x 6 inches to 8.5 x 11 inches. The HP7460 tends to sporadically configure itself or perform printer maintenance, and that too, without prior warning.

Color accuracy is mediocre as well. Although the HP D7460 is able to capture light tones like yellows and oranges very well, it has problems with dark tones like blues and greens. The HP D7460 does a good job representing lighter skin tones, but may miss accuracy in depicting greenery and sunny blue skies.

The mediocre performance continues in its color accuracy score, where the HP D7460 doesn't fare so well covering a wide range of colors. The HP D7460 is only able to cover about 43 percent of the entire color range, and was sorely beaten out by other printers like the Canon MX850, and the Canon iP1800, which was able to cover 55 percent of the color range.

The HP D7460 does have a nice, large 3.5-inch touchscreen. The printer’s entire menu is operated through its touch screen, and navigation and menu organization is a treat to scroll through. Sensitivity on the touch screen is configured well - the screen is just sensitive enough without being oversensitive. Through media cards, it is easy to print directly through the menu and navigate through options and editing.

Overall, the HP Photosmart D7460 provides a sleek look, a great touch screen and passable performance. For the price of $129, the quality doesn’t match other printers in its class but does exceed the price.
