Sennheiser HD 555 Headphones Review

The HD 555 headphones are part of Sennheiser's home theater line. They have an open-back design, which is great for creating a more open-sounding sound, but terrible from concealing your taste in music from those around you; a lot of the sound from the headphones escapes from the open back. If you want to watch movies without waking your room mate, look for closed-back on in-ear headphones. The HD 555s do have a 10 foot-long cord, which should allow you to hook up to a system clear across the room. The cords ends in a 1/4-inch plug, but you'll find a 3.5mm adapter in the box. Of course, since these headphones are so big and their cord is so long, the HD 555s aren't the most portable option out there.
The HD 555s have cloth-covered padding on both their ear cups and their band, which provides a nice cushion for your head. Additionally, the ear cups can swivel around a bit, in order to better conform to your head. The only comfort issue we ran into was that, after a few hours, the cloth got a little itchy.
These headphones have great audio quality. They correctly emphasize frequencies, with a slight boost to mid-range sounds. They only had extremely minimal distortion towards the lowest bassy frequencies, which is normal in on-ear and over-ear headphones. Since they have open backs, the HD 555s aren't the best with sound isolation or leakage. If you want to keep your noise to yourself, or keep external sounds at bay, the HD 555s won't help you out with that. At $179.99, the HD 555 headphones are a solid pair of cans for the user who doesn't require privacy and is looking for clear, bright sound with plenty of bass. For a more in-depth review, visit the Sennheiser HD 595 Review at our partner HeadphoneInfo.com
