Sennheiser MM50 iP Headphones Review

By Mark Brezinski

The Sennheiser MM50 iP headphones are a set of in-ears with an in-line microphone and are available for $100. The MM 50 iPs are ideal for use with cell phones (such as the iPhone, as their name intimates) both because of their portability, mic, and control button. The control button can be used to issue simple commands to compatible devices: for example, when connected to your iPhone, you can play/pause or fast-forward songs with the mic button. Our one major concern with the MM50 iP headphones is their durability. They don't have much of a cord guard, meaning the cord can bend very sharply at the point where it meets the plug. This can expedite wear and tear damage on the internal wires. In the MM50 iPs' case, they'll likely be connected to a device that's pitching and rolling around your pocket, and since the plug sticks straight out, it exacerbates the plug-cable junction as a stress point. We'd highly recommending reinforcing this area with electrical tape or some other material that will add a bit of rigidity to the cord.

Performance  (read the full lab performance results at HeadphoneInfo.com)
Our lab tests discovered the MM 50 iP headphones have outstanding audio quality, and not just for in-ear headphones. They were virtually distortion free, had great tracking (each channel played at relatively the same volume), and prevented leakeage. They also had an average frequency response and isolation. The MM 50 iPs really didn't have any shortcomings, just areas in which they excelled. Overall, these little in-ears had better audio quality than a lot of the full-sized headphones we've reviewed.

Comparisons  (read more in-depth comparisons at HeadphoneInfo.com)
At a paltry $100, the MM50 iP headphones are a great deal for their audio quality and headset features. Typically in-ear headphones with comparable audio quality cost two to three times as much. Even if you factor in the cost of electrical tape or something else to make sure the cord doesn't get beat up too quickly, the MM50 iPs are still worth the investment. Again, these headphones are great for commuters. Since the ear buds don't fall out easily and the control button will let you skip songs on your iPod (and some other media players as well), they're also great for joggers. They don't isolate you from external sounds as well as some other in-ears, like the Etymotic Research 6isolator headphones, but they do a good enough job. Provided you do a little preventative maintenance on the cord, we highly recommend the Sennheiser MM50 iP headphones.
