Dialing a number on the Z750a is quick and easy thanks to the comfortable to use keypad. The phone comes with a full selection of organizer features including contacts, calendar, tasks and notes, however these are limited in their functionality and won’t replace a PDA or smart phone. Audio quality on the Sony-Ericsson Z750a is a mixed bag. The audio sent by the phone was good, but audio received by the phone showed some problems that may cause voices to vacillate between too loud and too quite. Side tone, the small amount of your own voice piped back into your ear so you can judge how loudly you are speaking, was too low. This may cause you to speak louder than you should. The Z750a has software for listening to music and watching video, although we found that the software took a little too long to load. There are music control keys on the side of the device; letting you control playback while the device is closed. Given the phone’s limited memory you will need to invest in a memory card to store your multimedia, the Z750a uses MemoryStick Micro cards. The Z750a’s two-megapixel camera performed well in our tests. Although it lacks auto-focus we were pleased with the resolution of the photos produced while color was average. We did note that the camera performed particularly poorly in low light situations, which is typical of cell phone cameras. Still, the Z750a’s camera is better than that found on many more expensive phones. The Z750a’s software interface is attractive and easy to use. Email support is provided via a web-based application that supports most popular services, however it won’t allow you to store or access your email if you don’t have access to the data network. We were particularly fond of the text and multimedia support, with a unified composition window that allows you to easily add media items to a message. The large keypad on the Z750a allowed us to type at an impressive 44 words per minute. AT&T states on their product page that the Sony-Ericsson Z750a gets nine hours of talk time, but note that this is only if you aren’t using their newest third generation (3G) network. In our tests we found that using 3G the phone lasted almost five hours. This is above average overall and a good time for a phone that uses the battery hungry 3G network. Music playback time on the Z750a was just over nine hours, which should give you enough power to listen to music for a few hours and still be able to make calls. Browsing the web we were only able to manage three hours forty-five minutes. The Sony-Ericsson Z750a is an entry-level device that provides users with solid performance across the board. Of course there are going to be some drawbacks like less than impressive build quality, a thicker profile than a Razr and less than impressive audio quality. Despite these drawbacks we feel that the Z750a is an excellent choice for anyone looking to spend less than $50 on a cell phone.
