Sony MDR-DS6000 headphones review

The MDR-DS6000 headphones are a wireless, surround sound-enabled option from Sony. The system includes the headphones and a large, flat disk that serves as both a wireless transmitter and a charger for the headphones. In addition to wireless connectivity, these headphones feature digital surround sound. There are also a few interesting effects you can activate, which will boost certain aspects of the incoming audio.
On our audio testing, we found these headphones really don't offer the best quality. They play lower, bassy sounds correctly, but then steadily underemphasize mid-to-high range frequencies. Also, all frequencies suffer from minor distortion, with moderate distortion toward the high-end. We also manually tested the surround sound feature, but found it is a bit inconsistent. There were times when jets screamed across the screen and didn't create an accurate illusion. There were also times when two friends would be laughing at center screen, and one laugh would be totally oriented toward the left channel, while the other would only come out of the right. Effects like explosions or thunder sound great.
While the DS6000s aren't for audiophiles, they do have a market: the mainstream home theater audience. This demographic won't care about minor distortion or if the frequency response is off, and won't want cords running across their living room. They will, however, like the surround sound feature, if it is a bit inconsistent. The only problem is these headphones are priced at $299.99, which is a bit much for what they offer. While they aren't so expensive that they should be immediately discounted, we'd recommend checking other options before dropping the cash for these.
