This brush made detangling my curly hair a breeze

The EZ Detangling Brush is said to be a dream for everyone who wears their hair natural. It’s a detangling brush that is supposed to ease the pain of working through kinky and coily hair types, especially those with the tightest curl patterns from 3A to 4C.

I’ve worn my hair natural since 2013 and it is super thick and coily—great for putting this product to the test. If you’re a natural or know a natural, wash days can be long and tiring; this brush is supposed to cut the time in half and tackle those tangles and knots head-on without damaging or pulling out your hair.

How does the EZ Detangler Brush work?

At first glance, the EZ Detangler Brush (a similar brush is also sold on Amazon) appears flimsy and the bristles look too soft to rake through thick hair, especially natural hair. Where a brush normally has a cushion and a hard paddle exterior, this brush has flexible, rake-like tines jutting up from the handle designed to bend with the hair as you brush it. There’s also a locking clip on the back of the brush so you customize how the brush moves through your hair—you can either let the tines glide separately or lock them all together so they function more like a regular brush. The tiny pinholes in the back of the brush for the clip are there specifically for hair types; if you have short and thin hair, clip at the top to keep the tines from spreading out, and if you have thick and coarse hair, like me, put the clip on the bottom setting closest to the brush handle to allow more room between the tines. Picture this like running your hand through your hair with slightly closed fingers (fastening the clip to the top) or spreading your fingers wide so that you rake more hair through the openings (attaching the clip to the bottom).

What’s it like to use the EZ Detangling Brush?

After washing my hair, I applied a generous amount of my Creme Of Nature Mango & Shea Butter Ultra-Moisturizing Conditioner all over my head to ensure that every follicle was thoroughly moisturized and ready to be detangled. Every natural knows to start at the ends of the hair, then work your way upward to prevent pushing higher-up snarls down and making knots even tighter.

I opted to let the EZ brush’s bristles move with my hair, rather than locking them into place. I couldn’t believe how easy it was from the first swipe—brushing all the way up to the roots of my shoulder length (when straightened) hair was a breeze and my curls bounced right back into place after each stroke. In fact, after I detangled each section, I did a final all-over pass from roots to ends to make sure that my hair was thoroughly knot-free and that my curls were poppin’! What’s more: It cut my detangling time by half—it only takes me 15 minutes with the EZ brush!

I’d have to give the EZ Detangling Brush a grade “A” because of the convenience and ease it provided to an otherwise frustrating process. The EZ Detangler not only detangled my hair but also caused minimal shedding; so instead of the big puff ball of hair shed I normally get with a wig brush or my wide tooth comb, I had a small tablespoon of hair shed, which is exciting because I want to keep my hair as healthy and voluminous as possible. The brush handle is solid and sturdy, too, which is great because it didn’t slip even when I had conditioner on my hands. It truly does what it says it will: unsnarl even the kinkiest of curls with no pain or frustration.

Is the EZ Detangling Brush worth it?

You should buy the EZ Detangling Brush if you’re a naturalista looking for assistance and relief, and if you want to cut down time on wash day. In fact, you may start to look forward to wash days after experiencing this product. If your hair is anything like mine, this brush will leave your hair smooth and tangle-free but still voluminous with curls. You’ll wonder where this product has been your entire life. I couldn’t find any cons to the brush. I washed and conditioned my hair, used the brush as instructed and was more than happy with my results. The brush is a great product for people with natural hair, especially if you have thick coils like me. Don’t believe me? Give it a try!
