Design & Usability

The biggest name you've never heard

You may have never heard of Blomberg appliances, but the company is only a new kid on the block on this side of the Atlantic. They're manufactured by Arçelik, a Turkish company with a huge presence in European kitchens and laundry rooms. Other European brands owned by Arçelik include Beko and Grundig.

When it comes to design, the stainless DWT24100SS's control panel is certainly unique. Buttons stay depressed when pushed, and the control panel glows orange.

That display tells you a lot: how much time is remaining in a cycle, what wash cycles and options you’ve selected, and when to refill your rinse aid. One unfortunate aspect of the display, though, is that there isn’t enough room to show the full name of each wash cycle. Instead, as you’re selecting what kind of wash you want, the display will show P1, P2, P3, or P4, which respectively translate to Quick Wash, China/Crystal, Regular Wash, and Pots & Pans Plus. There’s a cheat sheet printed directly on the door above the LCD, but it’s still an annoyance.

We found that the DWT24100SS’s stainless steel interior has enough room for ten place settings and one serving setting. However, none of the supports can be adjusted in any way. The only thing that can be adjusted is the top rack’s height, but the process involves pulling the whole rack entirely off its track. The silverware basket is unique in that instead of hanging off the sides, it can go almost anywhere in the middle of the lower rack. It also has slots for keeping your silverware separated.

Features

The basics are covered, but it still feels lacking.

There aren’t very many cycles and options to choose from on the DWT24100SS. The basics are covered by the four cycles mentioned earlier: Quick Wash, China/Crystal, Regular Wash, and Pots & Pans Plus. A Half Load option will cut down water and energy use for a cycle if you do not have a full load, and a Tablet option is designed to improve washing performance when using all-in-one tablets instead of powder or liquid detergent. The Delay option on this machine is pretty robust, and can be set in 30-minute increments for up to 9.5 hours.

Despite those choices, a couple of common options are noticeably missing from the DWT24100SS: Sanitize and a control lock. While the Pots & Pans cycle got hot enough in our tests to sanitize dishes, there's no way to add that function to other cycles. A control lock isn’t strictly necessary on many dishwashers, but the DWT24100SS has front-facing buttons, including one that pauses a cycle. Being able to lock the controls would prevent anyone from accidentally interrupting a wash in progress.

Performance

Fast and efficient: just the way we like it.

Across the board, the DWT24100SS offered up the kind of impressive cleaning performance that we rarely see from a mid-range machine. It barely flinched at any of the stains we threw at it, no matter how tough or greasy. Most importantly, the DWT24100SS had no problems with redeposit—when food gets washed off one dish and gets stuck to another.

The DWT24100SS’s Regular cycle took two hours, which isn't bad at all. However, the Pots & Pans Plus cycle, which is designed for heavier stains, also clocked in at around two hours. That's even better. Both cycles cleaned exceptionally well. But if you really need a fast clean, the Quick Wash will deliver; it was over in just 26 minutes.

Strong cleaning scores are sometimes accompanied by terrible efficiency scores, but that didn’t happen here. The DWT24100SS’s estimated annual utility cost is about $27.32, which is about $5 below average. In short, this dishwasher can accomplish a lot using very little.

Why We Like It

Heavy on power, light on features, easy on the wallet

The DWT24100SS is an affordable dishwasher that does what it’s designed to do, but has no room for extra amenities. If raw cleaning power is what you’re interested in, then this affordable Turkish titan should be on the top of your list.

If it's adjustability you want, you might consider the Frigidaire Gallery FGHD2465NF. The Frigidaire offers the same cleaning power and folding tines, but lacks the wash efficiency and stainless steel interior of the DWT24100SS. Regardless of which you choose, both machines are great examples of how we envision the ideal mid-range dishwasher: less concerned with bells and whistles and more focused on getting the job done.

By the Numbers

Numbers are very important when figuring out what dishwasher to buy, and the Blomberg DWT24100SS's numbers look great. With high test scores, a low annual cost, and a low price tag, you’d be hard-pressed to find another machine that delivers this much power for this little money. Even though this Blomberg’s lack of flexibility and features will turn some buyers away, there’s no denying its cleaning ability.

Performance

If they raced dishwashers, this one would win

On the DWT24100SS’s Regular Wash cycle, nearly every stain was removed, which is impressive for an everyday cycle. Some of the baked-on oatmeal gave the machine some trouble, but the overall performance was very good. This cycle even removed 96% of the baked-on spinach, which is the toughest food stain on the test, and usually the source of redeposit. Not only was most of it gone, none of it got sprayed onto other dishes.

The Pots & Pans Plus cycle picked up what little slack the Regular Wash left behind. We added burnt sugar, burnt cheese, and baked-on lasagna to this test, and the DWT24100SS removed all of it without any problems. The spinach score climbed up to 98.71%, and once again, none of the green stuff could be found on other dishes. The oatmeal stains weren’t a problem here like it was on the Regular Wash. The best part is that this cycle took around two hours to complete, which is incredibly fast for a cycle designed for the heaviest messes.

The Quick Wash did not perform nearly as well as the other cycles, but it was over in the blink of an eye. Clocking in at 26 minutes, this cycle certainly lived up to its name. Unsurprisingly, many of the stains were left behind, such as dried milk and some of the meat stains. Not nearly strong enough for everyday loads, we can see it being useful against lighter stains such as juices or thin soups. Just don’t expect it to clean off baked-on stains or anything that’s been sitting out for a long time.

Efficiency

Barely uses any water

Overall, the DWT24100SS is a very efficient machine, and has a below-average annual utility cost. The Regular Wash cycle used 0.71 kWh of energy and 3.49 gallons of hot water, which is expected for an everyday cycle. The Pots & Pans Plus cycle used 1.30 kWh of electricity, which is a bit high, but it was balanced by low water consumption: just 5.45 gallons. Lastly, the Quick Wash barely makes a dent in utility costs, taking only 0.26 kWh of energy and 3.21 gallons of water. You can expect a year of running the DWT24100SS to cost around $27.32.

Capacity

Good capacity, but zero moving parts

We were able to fit ten place settings and one serving setting inside the DWT24100SS. Our main complaint about loading this dishwasher is the lack of adjustability. None of the tines can be folded down, so you might have trouble loading novelty dishware or other oddly-shaped items. The top rack can be raised or lowered, but making the adjustment involves pulling the entire rack off its track.
