Our review unit featured a slate finish, which is matte, so it doesn't show fingerprints. The sturdy handles are stainless steel, coordinating with appliances you might already own. However, you'll have to wipe prints off them.

The control panel is located at the spot where the doors meet. It lets you adjust the temperatures, turn on the door alarm, and start the Turbo Cool feature, which can compensate for adding a lot of warm leftovers to the fridge. If you ever lose power, once you get it back, use Turbo Cool and Turbo Freeze to bring temperatures in the fridge and freezer back down to where they should be.

The fridge's interior is lit by LEDs, which keeps everything bright and visible.

You can keep food organized on the four partially retractable shelves. Pull them back to accommodate tall items.

The doors feature six different gallon-sized bins, plenty of room for all your milk jugs and 2-liter soda bottles. You can move the bins around to customize the space. A small, narrow bin on the lowest level of each door is just big enough for little condiment jars, or possibly baby food.

The fridge has two crispers, one each for fruit and vegetables, and allows you to adjust the humidity for each drawer separately.

The long cold drawer provides space for cold cuts, cheeses, and other lunch supplies, and its location makes it easy for kids to access. A leftover pizza box would fit nicely, too. The drawer has its own temperature controls that let you keep it colder than the rest of the fridge.

The sliding dividers in the freezer let you divvy up the drawer's large storage area.

How we test refrigerators

Our lab operations manager, Jonathan Chan, stands before a line-up of fridges in our testing lab.

We perform the same set of standardized tests on each fridge that comes through our labs, letting us directly compare performances.

Here at Reviewed, we test all large appliances at our lab facilities in Cambridge, Mass. We've been testing fridges for over a decade, including top-freezers, bottom-freezers, side-by-sides, and French-door models.

Each fridge undergoes the same rigorous testing process, which lets us directly compare performances to see which models are the best value for your needs.

What we like

It has excellent temperature performance

You can adjust the temperature from the control panel.

The control panel is inside the refrigerator at the top. It's convenient to adjust the temperature there. Choose Turbo Cool when you put away warm leftovers.

The ideal fridge performance keeps temperatures close to 37°F in the fridge and 0°F in the freezer. This ensures items in the fridge are cool enough to keep bacterial growth in check, but not so cold that some items freeze. Temperature consistency helps keep frozen foods safe from freezer burn.

This fridge aced our performance tests, maintaining nearly ideal temperatures in the fridge and freezer. The fridge averaged 38.1°F and never got more than 1°F warmer or colder. The freezer averaged 0.34°F and also kept temperature fluctuations under 1°F. Temperatures also remained consistent throughout each compartment, ensuring food is properly preserved regardless of where it's stored.

There's a lot to like about this fridge's design

The water dispenser is in the door.

The water dispenser is in the door, leaving the front of the refrigerator smooth and sleek.

There are a lot of features that add to this fridge's overall aesthetic and user experience.

We like its internal water and ice dispenser, giving its outside surface a smooth, sleek look. Using the almost hidden water dispenser (inside the left-hand door) might take two hands, because the button is above the dispenser, which is a fine sacrifice to make for the fridge's handsome facade.

The fridge's interior is incredibly bright, thanks to its LED lighting. We could find items much more easily than in a traditional fridge lit by a single, dim bulb. This can help reduce food waste as you're less likely to lose track of leftovers.

We also love the quick space shelf, which allows you to slide the front half of the shelf underneath its back half, quickly and easily creating a ton of vertical space to store bottles or other tall objects.

What we don’t like

The crispers don't retain humidity well

You can adjust the humidity on each of the crispers separately.
Credit: Reviewed.com / Jackson Ruckar

You can adjust the humidity on each of the crispers separately.

Our main concern with this refrigerator is that it had trouble maintaining humidity. The produce drawers lost water three times faster than some of our highest-scoring models.

While this isn't dangerous, your apples and oranges may look tired if you keep them around for a while, and leafy greens will wilt more quickly.

What owners are saying

Owners are largely happy with their GE GNE25JMKES, awarding the fridge an average of 4.5 out of 5 stars across major retailers. The slate finish is very popular with owners, who love that it doesn’t show fingerprints. They also praise the amount of space in the bins on the doors.

A small number express concerns with the location of the control panel, which they said could reset when the doors close. We were unable to replicate that in our labs. Since the doors do not sit flush against the controls, they never bumped them. If closing the doors resets the control panel on your GNE25JMKES, contact the store or the manufacturer.

Warranty

GE covers the GNE25JMKES for one year of parts and service. This is the industry standard, though some manufacturers like LG and Samsung will provide longer warranties for their products.

Should you buy the GE GNE25JMKES?

Yes—This fridge does a lot well for its price

Between its great test results, a robust feature set, and a clean, classy look, the GE GNE25JMKES offers a lot for its purchase price. This fridge will be a stunning focal point wherever it makes its home.

Its 33" width will also be a boon for those who need to fit a particularly narrow footprint.

If you're interested in the GE GNE25JMKES, we also recommend checking out the gorgeous Samsung Bespoke RS28CB760012. Not only does it have excellent performance, but you can fully customize its appearance.
