Working from home over the past few years may have brought on a few strange habits. For me, it's the way that I sit in my office chair while I work. Whether I'm sitting cross-legged or with my legs up on a stool, you can typically find me with my feet off the ground. I find sitting with my legs at a 90-degree angle all day is uncomfortable.

My existing office chair isn't all that accommodating to my preferred positions, so when I heard about the Pipersong Meditation Chair (available at Amazon) with a built-in footrest, clean aesthetic, and the promise of dozens of seated positions to choose from, it seemed almost too good to be true.

I decided to give this TikTok-famous chair a whirl—here's how it went.

What is the Pipersong Meditation Chair?

The Pipersong Meditation Chair allows you to sit in a wide variety of positions such as cross-legged, squatting, and kneeling. The seat cushion is made with 3.7-inches of high resilience foam. The chair's height is adjustable, ranging anywhere from 19.7 inches to 23.7 inches, and can accommodate desks that are 29 inches to 35 inches tall.

The recommended weight limit for the chair is up to 250 pounds. A crescent-shaped, 360-degree swivel footstool, equipped with several universal caster wheels, is attached to the chair. The stool is, in part, made from 1.5-inch thick high density foam. (Pipersong recommends you don’t sit on the footrest itself, but feel free to put your legs on it however you like.)

Similarly, the backrest uses crescent-shaped contour and provides a 120-degree complete lumbar support, claiming to relieve lumbar fatigue and help you to feel secure while you switch positions.

What we like

The chair offers a variety of comfortable seating positions

Unlike traditional seating, the Pipersong Meditation Chair allows you to sit in various positions–which is especially useful if you're working for extended periods of time.

There are plenty of ways you can adjust your seat with the Pipersong Meditation Chair, and this is one of the best things about it. If you start to get bored of sitting in one position, you can easily switch it up, helping you sit more comfortably.

For example, you can sit crisscross applesauce, you can have your legs up on it, or you can have one leg up and one leg crossed under. However you like to get cozy, you can do so on this chair, and I had no problem cozying up myself. You can also turn the footrest around and straddle it.

Not to mention, the high-density foam plush seat is very soft and pleasing to sit on for hours at a time.

The chair is easy to assemble

If you're not particularly handy, like me, don't fret: this chair is fairly easy to put together.

When the Pipersong chair arrived in the box, I was a little worried about putting it together by myself. As someone who is not very handy, I thought I would break it before I even got a chance to sit in it.

The instructions were pretty clear (although no words were provided, just pictures) and all the tools you needed were in the packaging.

All in all, it took me about 20 minutes to assemble by myself before I was sitting pretty.

If you hadn't guessed from its name, you can also use it for meditation

True to its name, this chair can be essential to your routine if you're a frequent meditator.

While this is technically marketed as a meditation chair, most of the reviews say that people typically use this chair as an office chair, like me.

However, it is also ideal for meditating and is easy to settle into a comfortable meditative position for a long while.

Just close your eyes during your lunch break, take a few deep breaths, and try to forget about all those emails that need a reply.

What we don’t like

The back support could be better

If you desire a chair with lumbar support or even a sturdier back while you work, this chair falls a bit short when it comes to comfort.

Sometimes, during a long work day, you just want to flop back into your chair and relax. While the seat of the chair is comfortable, the back leaves a lot to be desired. It feels rigid and it forces you to sit up straight. The latter is technically a good thing for your posture, but I want my office chair to have a more relaxed feel to it without sacrificing ergonomics. The Pipersong Meditation Chair chair does not have the supportive and cozy feel I am looking for.

The foot stool is permanently attached

Although the foot rest can be rotated to the side and even the back, it cannot be removed.

If you have a small office to begin with, the chair with attached footstool will take up a good amount of floor space, even if you push the footstool to the side. Since the footstool is attached to the chair, you can’t remove it or put it away if you ever want to use the chair just as a regular chair.

If you did want to just put your feet on the ground, you can swivel the footrest to the side—but even that’s not as simple as it sounds.

Pipersong says the footrest swivels all the way around, and I suppose that is true, but it stops when it swivels it to the right about 45 degrees, so you’ll have to swivel it to the left all the way around the back to meet at that same point in order to meet it at the full extension.

I would prefer the footrest to move all the way around from either side, and not stop abruptly.

It's bigger than your average office chair

Make sure you've got room in your office for the Pipersong Meditation Chair, as it is larger and wider than a standard office chair for obvious reasons. If you live in a small space, I recommend measuring before you order to ensure the right fit.

It lacks armrests and is hard to move

One omission from this chair is that there are no armrests. While armrests would get in the way of many of the chair’s sitting positions, I did miss having somewhere to put my arms sometimes.

Additionally, the multiple wheels on the footstool and chair made it complicated to physically move, especially if you’re still on it. Once again, not the biggest complaint, but these tiny issues do add up.

Should you buy the Pipersong Meditation Chair?

Maybe, if you are looking for a chair with multiple seating positions

The Pipersong Meditation Chair is one of those items that just remains on your wishlist because it's a want and not a need.

The Pipersong Meditation Chair is quirky, cute, and a conversation starter. If you move around a lot or like to place your legs in various positions throughout the day, then the Pipersong Meditation Chair might be right for you. The density foam is comfortable for sitting on top of all day long. Like me, you’ll be sure to get a lot of work done while sitting in this versatile chair, switching positions every hour or so, to stay inspired and comfortable while on the job.

That said, this is a niche product that, for me, loses its novelty after a while. While testing the Pipersong Meditation Chair, it was enjoyable, but I often found myself wanted too quickly get up without the hassle of moving the footstool. Additionally, the chair also lacks armrests, which may be a dealbreaker for some.

For daily use, I’d opt for a more traditional office chair like the Autonomous ErgoChair Pro combined with a footstool under your desk. While this configuration doesn't offer as many positions as the Pipersong Meditation Chair, it is adjustable, comes with armrests, and is better suited for smaller spaces.
