Whether you’re a young single person or part of a large household, nothing has the power to disrupt your day like waiting for the wash to finish. It’s one of several problems that GE addressed with its new GTW680BSJWS washing machine—part of a line that we’ve affectionately referred to as “the great American washer.”

Well, after putting the new machine through the wringer, we have some good news to report: It can run a Normal load in just 34 minutes. That’s 17 percent faster than the previous fastest top-loader to pass through our labs, the Kenmore Elite 31462. That machine managed a Normal cycle in 41 minutes.

It’s worth noting that the new GE isn’t the fastest washer we’ve tested overall. LG’s TurboWash models (like the WM3575CV) have produced blisteringly fast 31-minute normal cycles, thanks to the inherent advantages of their front-loading design. It’s also true that larger loads will take longer to run. Our standard 8-pound test load is on the small side for a 4.6-cu.-ft. washer like this one.

Still, it’s a new high water mark for the older top-loader design. And if you need your clothes done even quicker, the machine also offers a crazy fast 15-minute Speed Wash cycle for last-minute emergencies.
