No one is more nurturing than Mom. This year, give that love back while also giving some big love to the mother of all mothers, Mother Earth.
A recent study showed that 77% of Americans want to learn how to live more sustainably. While it may seem like a daunting lifestyle overhaul, little changes can make a big difference, including the way we buy gifts.
Here our some of our favorite eco-minded companies and the sustainable gifts they sell. Each of these gifts will do good for the earth by practicing high standards in sustainability, and they’ll do good for you—earning you all sorts of brownie points with Mom.
1. For the active mom
Quick-drying, wrinkle-resistant, and versatile, this romper is sure the be the MVP staple of Mom’s summer wardrobe. This super-stylish and multi-functional one piece is for the mom who may not be quite ready to shed 2020’s athleisure aesthetic but is still ready to step out on shopping trips and casual hangouts a bit more fashionably.
Mom will look great and you can feel good knowing that Patagonia is one of the most highly rated B-Corps, gaining at score of 151 for its sustainability practices. You really can’t go wrong when looking to Patagonia for sustainability, but this romper, in particular, is made from a 91% recycled polyester and 9% spandex blend and it gets rapturous reviews for being comfortable, breathable, and universally flattering.
2. For the mom who is always on her feet
A pair of shoes that looks pulled together and are from the line that makes “the most comfortable shoes on earth”? We know that these are bold claims, but our our testers couldn't agree more. These all-purpose flats may not actually have Mom walking on clouds but she’ll definitely feel that way.
These chic Instagram sensations are super-soft, sustainable, and are made with temperature-regulating Tencile and merino wool. They are also made from materials that will be some serious conversation-starters during that Mother’s Day brunch, including eucalyptus, sugarcane, and recycled water bottles.
3. For the mom who wants to get cozy
From park picnics to beach days to camping to cozying up on the couch, this versatile blanket has more uses than you can imagine. Great for backyard movie nights and camp-side stargazing, these upcycled blankets are handwoven with recycled yarns and biodegradable, naturally dried palm leaves. We don’t want to embarrass ourselves by giving too many accolades, but these blankets also roll up to be easily transportable. Shall we go on? OK, fine, we will: Nipomo is also a women-owned company that stands by fair wages and clean, safe work environments.
4. For the mom who likes her morning cup of Joe
From bean to bag, this woman-run specialty coffee roaster is as serious about the environment as it is about making incredible coffee. Founded in 2007 as the first coffee roaster to be recognized as B-Corp certified, it meets the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance and public transparency.
One Village focuses on inclusion and sustainability in their business practices and is committed to making a business model that is just as much about roasting excellent beans as it is to making a more conscious connection between roasters, growers, and coffee drinkers. Plus, their coffee just tastes darn good (and their pastel packaging is gift-wrap-level pretty).
5. For the mom who is a sucker for organization
Who knew cork could be so pretty? This gorgeous, vegan, cork bag is made for cosmetics, but we won’t judge Mom if she wants to carry it around where everyone can see. If she does use it as intended, this sustainably made carrier can store up to seven bottles or brushes and keeps cosmetics organized and upright to prevent spills. But—should spills occur—it features waterproof waxed canvas on the inside and the sustainably harvested cork on the outside can be washed down with water and dish soap for a quick clean.
6. For the mom who loves to camp
If your mom is one of the millions of people who took up camping this year, she’s going to love this sustainable and biodegradable portable cutlery set. The fork, knife, spoon, and chopsticks (so necessary for camp-side cooking) are made from sustainable bamboo and the cute carrying case is made from recycled water bottles.
This eco-friendly set is lightweight enough to work just as well on an easy car camping trip as it does on a backpacking excursion, when weight is a premium. We also like that the sturdy case can slip easily into a purse or lunch sack for park picnics or work lunches. Whether she’s an eco-friendly camper or an al fresco diner, Mom will love these.
7. For the mom who's ready to leave the house
We’ve all been inside too much this year! If Mom is ready to break out and feel stylish doing so, Nisolo is known for their sustainable leather practices that are fair trade and use chrome-free dyes in the leather tanning process. We love that this chic little clutch looks just as good on its own for a night out as it does stowed away for keeping small essentials in a tote or carry-on.
8. For the mom who likes to hydrate
Family and employee-owned, Kleen Kanteen is a business that is 100% climate-neutral certified. Our testers loved this bottle for its Climate Lock insulation, which keeps water cold for up to two days and—if Mom loves her coffee or tea—can also be used for hot beverages. The powder coat makes it easy to carry for walks or hikes, and we like that Kleen Kanteen makes a variety of interchangeable caps—from a leak-proof loop cap to a quick-twist cafe cap—allowing you to swap out options so you can customize the bottle to Mom’s taste.
9. For the skincare enthusiast
Caudalie is the French skincare brand that’s known for the purity of its products and for being the largest "1% for the Planet" contributor in the cosmetics industry. Caudalie gained its reputation with their 100% plant-based elixir that has been a cult beauty classic since 1997.
Considered a pioneer in “cosm-ethics,” every year Caudalie reevaluates its commitment to sustainability and the environment, striving to improve their practices. Delicious-sounding ingredients, like vine and grape extracts, floral and botanical waters, and plant and fruit extracts make up the base of their products, while safe synthetics are added in small quantities as needed. What’s missing are animal-derived ingredients, mineral oils, and potential endocrine disruptors.
Our recommendation is their instant detox mask, which is touted for purging skin of toxins without irritation and leaving skin silky smooth.
10. For the mom who needs a robe (really)
OK, we know that SNL has poked fun at the fact that a new robe is the ubiquitous and uninspired mom-gift, but maybe that’s because we’ve been getting the robes all wrong.
Reviewers seem to think the organic cotton waffle robe from Coyuchi is the robe that will make mom swoon. Reviewers say they are “obsessed,” it’s “the robe of the gods,” and “It's the robe I've always wanted.” If Mom needs a robe, this is the year to get her one that’s “a great frickin robe” (real quote). This one is made from 100% organic cotton at a factory that recycles 98% of its wastewater, so you can just keep gloating when your brother gives her a lesser gift. It’s time to win Mother's Day. You’re welcome.
11. For the mom who wants some bling
This is the type of gift to make siblings jealous. Mom will get tons of mileage out of this effortlessly chic cuff that works well on its own but also pairs beautifully with bangle bracelets.
Made by Able, an ethical fashion brand based out of Nashville, has worked to create a more sustainable business by looking at waste metals as a renewable source. All scrap is melted it down and processed into new sheets of gold and silver, and it has moved away from some of the harsher chemicals used in the jewelry manufacturing process in favor of natural solutions.
12. For the mom who just wants to take a nap
When she’s desperate for some shut-eye, she can drift off to dreamland feeling good about this sustainably made sleep mask. This 100% organic cotton mask is “luxury loomed” on one side (which sounds amazing to us) and quilted on the other. In a previous life, the material for these masks were linens from Ace Hotel, but they’ve been thoughtfully upcycled from being a sleep necessity to a stylish sleep luxury. For a sound and sustainable sleep, these masks can’t be beat.
13. For the mom who needs her bon bons
Earn brownie points with mom and with Mother Earth with these eco-conscious and sustainable chocolates. Alter Eco is an organic and certified fair trade chocolate brand with delicious and delectable truffles that come in flavors like burnt caramel, brown butter, and sea salt. The company is also B-Corp certified and has worked to raise the bar for organic farming and invests in regenerative practices for their cocoa. This is a company that does good, while making some undeniably good chocolate that’s silky and balanced.
