Along with four gas burners, the range has a center griddle burner.

The preheat is fast (even by gas standards)

The JGB735SPSS is very quick to preheat. Both the standard and convection bake settings took just over 6 minutes to reach 350°F. That’s incredibly fast to the annoyance of our top-rated gas range, the Samsung NX58K9500WG, which took 7 minutes to reach the same temperature.

Bakers will love this even oven

During our testing sessions, the JGB735SPSS didn’t only preheat quickly, it also impressed when it came to baking and roasting. The range did well in our cookie, pizza, and pork tests.

We roasted a large cut of pork in the oven, which emerged evenly cooked on the inside and nicely browned on the outside.

We also baked a pizza using the standard bake setting. At the end of the test, the pizza dough was cooked all the way through. The only issue we noticed was that the bottom of the crust on the left was very dark, so you may need to rotate your food midway for a perfectly even bake.

Finally, we baked a few batches of cookies using the standard and convection oven modes. The standard bake setting resulted in perfectly even cookies. The convection setting had some issues, however. We baked two batches of cookies using the upper and lower racks. The cookies cooked on the bottom rack were noticeably darker than those on the upper rack.

The air fryer mode works well

Love them or hate them, air fryer modes in ovens are here to stay, so it’s always a pleasant surprise when they exceed our expectations.

In our tests of ranges across the board, we often find that the standard bake setting does a far better job of air frying food than the built-in dedicated setting. The JGB735SPSS bucked this trend with an air fryer mode that did a pretty good job of cooking a batch of french fries.

We did notice a few burnt bits here and there, but generally, the fries were all cooked through and crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

The only issue with the otherwise excellent oven was its uneven multi-rack cooking.

Multi-rack cooking resulted in uneven baking

While the standard and convection settings did an excellent job of baking and roasting food evenly, when we tried multi-rack cooking, things began to look a little shaky.

Using the convection setting, we baked two batches of cookies on the upper and lower racks. The cookies cooked on the bottom rack were noticeably darker than those cooked on the upper rack.

What owners are saying

The GE JGB735SPSS has an average 4.7-star user rating out of 5 across major retailers. Users like its convection evenness and the air fry mode. The vast majority of reviews are positive, but the few negative reviews take issue with the flimsy storage drawer.

Should you buy the GE JGB735SPSS freestanding gas range?

Yes, if the price is right

If you’re in the market for an affordable gas range and aren’t too interested in smart features then the GE JGB735SPSS is a fine choice. The range impressed us with its even oven, fast preheat, and competent air fryer mode.

If you're looking for an alternative, you can check out the Whirlpool WFG535S0JS, which has a highly efficient five-burner stovetop with a reliable oven and is a less expensive option on our list of Best Gas Ranges we've tested.

Our Best Overall pick, the Samsung NX58K9500WG remains the gold standard, but if your budget is within the $1,000 range and a freestanding is your only option the feature-lite GE JGB735SPSS occupies a perfect sweet spot between good performance and reasonable price.
