In addition to existing capabilities like note-taking and picture sharing, a new Family Hub upgrade will allow cameras with artificial intelligence to scan your fridge for items, then update its internal inventory on what you have, what you don't, and how quickly you tend to use up certain items. With that information, the fridge can then help recommend recipes per your personalized dietary preferences, create meal plans based on your current inventory, and prepare shopping lists for everything you might need.

All these new features are powered by Whisk, a food AI startup recently acquired by Samsung NEXT. Whisk is a meal planning technology that can help meal plan for a week's worth of meals and create a consolidated shopping list. The system also boasts the ability to generate recipes based on inventory and the number of guests who you'll be dining with.

The AI technology seems promising

We're interested to see what's possible with AI-based food recognition cameras. If your fridge can keep an accurate inventory of what you have in stock, even if that's just based on packaging shape and bar codes, you'll always know what's going bad or needs to get used up soon, and you'll never run into a situation where something gets lost in the back of the fridge only to be found long after it's bloomed with mold. The dynamic recipe generation also seems promising. No more huffing about potential meals—all options will just be laid out before you.

Smart features encourage families to connect

In addition to all the food-tracking features, the fridge also boasts the standard array of smart functionality—from apps to WiFi connectivity to music and video playback. Samsung is also doubling down on making Family Hub fridges live up to their name by adding the ability to leave video messages on the fridge for fellow family members to see, further strengthening its use as a digital white board of sorts.

Features and finishes offer a high-end look

While maybe not as exciting as AI-powered cameras and video messaging, the Samsung RS5300 will also have some higher-end fridge features like recessed handles and an ice/water dispenser.

Should you buy the Samsung RS5300?

Since we have yet to test this fridge in our labs, it's too early to make a recommendation on whether or not it's worth buying. But based on what we know now, the AI technology seems like a legitimately useful feature. Additionally, Samsung has a tendency to make some top-tier refrigerators at an affordable price. Expect it to be available across major retailers later this year.
