Snow is bucketing down here in Boston, and that can only mean one thing: It's time for Canon to refresh its point-and-shoot camera lineup yet again. This year, the focus is on high-end enthusiast compacts and long-zoom models, but there's something here for everyone.

The enthusiast-oriented models are particularly interesting, since they go all-in on the 1-inch sensor concept originally pioneered by Sony with its RX100 series. Canon is one of four manufacturers making such cameras, competing alongside Sony, Nikon, and Panasonic.

G-Series Enthusiast Cameras

G7 X Mark II

We really liked the original G7 X, and this updated version takes everything we loved about it and makes it a little better. A new processor, a new grip, and a better screen are just icing on the cake that is an ultra-bright 4.2x zoom and a large 1-inch sensor.

KEY SPECS: • 20.1-megapixel 1-inch CMOS sensor • 24-100mm (equiv.) f/1.8-2.8 lens • 3-inch touch-sensitive, multi-angle screen • 1080/60p video capture • RAW photo capture • Built-in WiFi and NFC • Customizable control ring • MSRP $699.99

G5 X

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot G5 X", asin="B0167Q0VP4", align="right"}} The G5 X is something of a middle child in the lineup, squeezing in between the G3 X and G7 X Mark II by offering enthusiast-level controls and an electronic viewfinder—something no other G-series camera provides. Other standout features include a hot shoe, a lens-mounted control ring, and a fully articulating touchscreen LCD. In other words, the G5 X has all the toys enthusiasts love, with a competitive price tag to boot.

KEY SPECS: • 20.2-megapixel 1-inch CMOS sensor • 24-100mm (equiv.) f/1.8-2.8 lens • 2.36 million dot electronic viewfinder • 3-inch touch-sensitive, multi-angle screen • 1080/60p video capture • RAW photo capture • Built-in WiFi and NFC • MSRP $799.99

G9 X

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot G9 X", asin="B0167Q140U", align="right"}} The G9 X is both the smallest and the most affordable G-series camera. The compact design is incredibly attractive—it means the camera can go virtually anywhere with you—but it also means the lens is a little less impressive than those in other G-series models, the screen doesn't tilt or swivel, and the controls are slightly less robust. Still, it's a plenty capable shooter and easily one of the most powerful you can put in a jeans pocket.

KEY SPECS: • 20.2-megapixel 1-inch CMOS sensor • 28-84mm (equiv.) f/2-4.9 lens • Pocket-sized design • 3-inch touch-sensitive screen • 1080/60p video capture • RAW photo capture • Built-in WiFi and NFC • Customizable control ring • MSRP $529.99

SX-Series Extended Zoom Cameras

PowerShot SX720 HS

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot SX720 HS (Black)", asin="B01BV14I40", align="right"}} The PowerShot SX720 HS has two big things going for it: a whopping 40x zoom and a very competitive $379.99 MSRP. Under the hood, it sports a high-res CMOS sensor, Canon’s latest Digic 6 processor, and WiFi and NFC connectivity. What doesn’t it offer? A viewfinder, a tilting screen, 4K video, or very many advanced features and controls.

KEY SPECS: • 20.3-megapixel CMOS sensor • 40x zoom lens w/ optical image stabilization • 3-inch screen • 1080/60p video capture • Built-in WiFi and NFC • MSRP $379.99

PowerShot SX540 HS

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot SX540 HS", asin="B019UDIAI6", align="right"}} The top-of-the-heap superzoom for the year is the PowerShot SX540 HS, featuring 50x optical zoom and a zippy new Digic 6 processor. Armed with a 24-1200mm reach and a 20.3 MP CMOS sensor, this camera can also manage 1080/60p HD video. WiFi and NFC are also onboard for an asking price of $399.99.

KEY SPECS: • 50x (24-1200mm equivalent) optical zoom • 20.3MP CMOS sensor • 1080/60p video • WiFi and NFC connectivity • MSRP $399.99

PowerShot SX420 HS

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot SX420 IS", asin="B019UDI87O", align="right"}} The SX420 HS is a little bit of an update from last year's model, with a smaller chassis and a more comfortable grip. Built around a 42x optical zoom lens (up 2x from its predecessor), the camera is also able to shoot MP4 video, which means it can be more easily shared without transcoding. It'll ring the till for $299.99 when it's available this spring.

KEY SPECS: • 42x (24-1008mm equivalent) optical zoom • 20MP sensor • 720p video in MP4 format • WiFi and NFC connectivity • MSRP $299.99

PowerShot ELPH 360 HS

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot ELPH 360 HS", asin="B019UDI3JC", align="right"}} The queen of the compact PowerShot ELPH castle is the new ELPH 360 HS, which rocks a 12x optical zoom, an improved 20-megapixel CMOS sensor, and optical image stabilization for $209.99.

KEY SPECS: • 12x optical zoom • 20MP CMOS sensor • Optical image stabilization • 1080p video recording • WiFi and NFC connectivity • Black, silver, and purple color options • MSRP $209.99

PowerShot ELPH 180

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot ELPH 180", asin="B019UDHOMO", align="right"}} If you don't want to spend that much for a pocket camera, consider the PowerShot ELPH 180. The new entry-level ELPH packs a bargain bin 20MP CCD sensor, digital image stabilization, and a relatively short 8x optical zoom for $119.99.

KEY SPECS: • 8x optical zoom • 20MP CCD sensor • 720p video • Silver and red color options • MSRP $119.99

PowerShot ELPH 190 IS

{{amazon name="Canon PowerShot ELPH 190 IS", asin="B019UDHV6S", align="right"}} One step up from the 180 is the PowerShot ELPH 190 IS, which tacks on WiFi, NFC, optical image stabilization, and a longer 10x optical zoom lens for an additional $40.

KEY SPECS: • 10x optical zoom • 20MP CCD sensor • Optical image stabilization • 720p video • WiFi and NFC connectivity • Black, red, and blue color options • MSRP $159.99

2015 Carry-Over Models

G Series

On top of the three new G-series models, Canon is still selling three more. The G1 X Mark II is a bit of an oddball, using a relatively huge 1.5-inch sensor, while the G3 X pairs a 1-inch imaging chip with an extended zoom and DSLR-style handling. The G16 is a carryover from nearly three years ago, and its aging 1/1.7-inch sensor can't keep up with today's 1-inch models.

SX Series

Panasonic may make the best superzooms on the market today, but Canon's SX60 HS (like the SX50 before it) has been by far one of the best sellers. It's no wonder why: The SX60 HS offers a big zoom range, speedy performance, and Canon's signature usability, and does it at an affordable price.

S Series

Canon hasn't updated its S-series camera in a couple years, and with the arrival of the G9 X, it wouldn't surprise us if the S120 is the end of the line. If that's the case, we can't think of a better send-off. This is a great camera, pairing excellent performance with intuitive and customizable controls and a beautifully compact design.

D Series

Most major camera manufacturers offer a waterproof model, and this is Canon's. Sadly, in our tests, it proved to be the worst waterproof model you can buy. Canon hasn't updated this line in a few years, but it's one camera that could desperately use a refresh.

N Series

Want a camera that's a little... different? Don't care about usability so much as looks? The PowerShot N line might be just right for you. These odd, tent-shaped cameras are designed to put social sharing ahead of ergonomics and imaging features, but it's not clear thus far whether the experiment has paid off for Canon.
