Even though you probably can't remember the last time you even saw someone carrying a consumer-grade camcorder, Canon has taken some care (as it has each year for the past decade or more) to spruce up its Vixia offerings.

While the 2016 lineup looks a lot like the 2015 offerings with a new coat of paint, these camcorders still offer decent performance for the money. Read on for all the details.

Canon Vixia HF R70, R72, & R700

If you've bought a compact Canon Vixia in the past few years, the formula is mostly the same this year. R72, and R700 fit the same spots in the lineup as last year's R60, R62, and R600.

You'll find very similar designs, zoom lenses, and overall size and shapes for this year's Vixias. The big upgrades that Canon is touting have to do with the LCD, which sports a brighter backlight and an improved user interface.

Like previous Vixias, these three models are differentiated by their built-in storage. The HF R70 has 32GB onboard, the HF R72 has just 16GB, and the entry-level HF R700 has none (just an SD card slot).

KEY SPECS: • 57x advanced zoom w/ optical image stabilization • 1080/60p recording in MP4 or AVCHD format • Dual recording option for simultaneous MP4/AVCHD • Slow (0.5x) and fast (1200x) motion recording • 3.28-megapixel CMOS sensor • WiFi and NFC connectivity • 32/16/0 GB of onboard storage • MSRP $449.99/$399.99/$299.99 • Available February 2016

Canon Vixia HF G40

If you're looking for substantially more power from your camcorder, the Canon HF G40 is a consumerized version of the excellent professional-level XA30.

You won't get the built-in handle, XLR microphone jacks, or HD-SDI port, but you do get the same lens, image stabilization, and sensor combination from the more expensive XA-series models. Canon will be selling this prosumer camcorder for $1,299, which basically nets you $2,400 worth of image quality.

KEY SPECS: • 20x zoom w/ 5-axis optical image stabilization • 1080/60p recording in MP4 or AVCHD format • Zebra, Color Bars and Test Tone • High-resolution EVF • HD CMOS PRO image sensor • Linear PCM audio recording • MSRP $1,299.99 • Available February 2016
