Editor's Note:

Shopping for an inexpensive range often means making some sacrifices when it comes to features or performance.

Enter the Whirlpool WFG5050M0B gas range (MSRP $749), which retails for anywhere between $500 and $640, depending on sales. We like the 505's low price, but unfortunately it lacks some basic settings and features that other budget ranges boast.

For instance, it has an old-fashioned broiler drawer and lacks both a self-clean setting and a Sabbath mode. That's why we think you’d be better off buying the better-equipped Whirlpool WFG515S0ES. If you find the right sale, there's usually not a huge price difference between the two.

Rangetop

Five burners and a griddle

{{ photo_gallery name="Rangetop" }}

The rangetop houses 5 gas burners, topped by cast iron grates. The two front burners have an output of 15,000 BTU, while the center has 8,000 and the rear burners output 9,500 and 5,000, respectively. An included griddle can be used on top of the side burners with low flame. That's a nice extra, but not one that's worth a significant price premium, as a Lodge cast iron griddle sells for about $40.

Oven & Broiler

Bake and broil are all it’s got

This stainless range is nice enough to look at, and we have no complaints about the size of its 5.1 cubic ft. oven cavity. However, the broiler is located in a drawer below the oven, rather than in the cavity. This is usually a hallmark of an extremely inexpensive range, and it also means you’ll have to bend down every time you want to broil.

{{ photo_gallery name="Oven" }}

The oven does not have a self-clean cycle, which could make it a pain to clean. And it doesn’t have a Sabbath mode, which is a setting that we typically see on almost every oven. What it does have is one oven setting: bake. The broiler drawer down below has a temperature-adjustable broil setting. There are no other settings.

Warranty & Manual

For one year from the date of purchase, Whirlpool will cover the cost of replacement parts and labor to repair any defects in the materials or workmanship of the range . That’s pretty standard for ranges at this price point. For more information, read about the warranty on the manufacturer’s site.
