Apple wants you to buy a $1,000 monitor stand—and it's their most ridiculously priced product yet

Just...no

We were willing to fork over $1,499 for a Macbook Pro. And $199 for AirPods after the headphone jack disappeared. After all, our experts did deem them the best wireless earbuds of 2019). But nearly $1,000 for a monitor stand? Sorry Apple, but that’s where we draw the line.

Announced at Apple’s annual WWDC conference yesterday, the $999 aluminum stand is sold separately from the new Mac Pro display, which also isn’t cheap, starting at $4,999. The adjustable magnetic arm will allow users to easily rotate the Mac Pro 90 degrees to portrait mode.

The $999 stand in all of its glory.

And while our Executive Editor TJ Donegan reasons that the price of the 6K monitor itself is fairly reasonable compared to other professional monitors (which can run upwards of $40,000), he argues that the stand’s outrageous cost isn’t fair to users.

Calling the price tag “absurd,” Donegan says, “There's innovating just for the sake of it and then there's gouging your pro customers because you think they can afford it.” It’s a sentiment that the Internet seems to agree with as people have taken to Twitter to roast the tech company for its expensive new stand.

So unless you’re willing to shell out more than you’d pay for a new iPhone XS just for a monitor stand, you may want to pass on the Mac Pro as well. Or at least settle for propping up your very expensive, very high-quality display against the wall (which, by the way, we do not recommend).
