Look Out, Nexus 7

Today, Acer launched a new entry into the tablet arena, it's Iconia A1. With a screen at 7.9" like the iPad mini, it seems to try to bridge the gap between an Android device, and the image ratio of an iPad in a small form factor. Consumers who like the iPad mini but are looking for a bargain may want to wait for the Iconia A1.

The spec list is fairly pedestrian, but that's because the 8GB model will be sold at $169USD, and the 16GB version will be sold at $199, drastically undercutting the tiny Apple competitor in price. A peek under the hood shows a 1024 x 768 screen, Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean), a quad-core MediaTek processor, and a microSD card slot for users who want expandable storage.

It remains to be seen what kind of demand this product will generate, but early signs are promising. However, Acer may find itself in a bind like the other small tablet manufacturers in alienating third-party vendors by making a move in the "race to the bottom" in price.

For those interested, the Acer Iconia A1 is set to release in June of 2013, amid a flurry of new releases, and even a potential 8-inch Windows 8 Tablet.
