Polar has been making wearable technology since before the term "wearable" came into fashion. Its maiden product was a heart rate monitor that came out in 1977. In 2015, the Finnish company is still actively involved in the fitness tech market.
At CES this year Polar even sponsored a triathlon to highlight its new line of health gadgets, including a fitness band and a smart coaching system called Polar Flow. The new A300 wearable fitness tracker is a lighter version of the V800, which is intended for more serious athletes. The coaching system maintains a digital diary of your exercise regimen and connects you with a community of other fitness buffs.
Tim Don, a world champion triathlete, wore Polar's flagship V800 activity tracker at CES in Las Vegas. He explained how the coaching system helps him train.
"Having a coach is crucial, and the more data I can give her the more specific my training can be," he told Reviewed.com. "If I can gain one or two percent with exact data it's absolutely golden."
The idea of the A300, the younger sibling of the more robust V800, is to give casual athletes a way to track their progress and analyze their fitness regimen. Mr. Don believes that everyone can find value in the technology, which has sensitive heart rate sensors that can track everything from distance traveled to calories burned.
"The end result is often not the goal, it's the process. Even if you're not breaking world records, it's nice to have small goals, and this helps you set them," he said.
The new A300 has a list of features that includes daily activity tracking, heart rate based smart coaching, calorie counting, and a durable weatherproof design. But the real benefit stems from using this product throughout the day.
Polar technology uses heart rate sensors to determine when you've been active or inactive for too long, using Bluetooth to send an alert to your phone when you've over or under-trained. It also gives you the option to share training sessions with friends and the Polar Flow training community.
The Polar A300 is currently available for $159.95. Interchangeable wrist bands are available in white, black, pink, blue, grey or yellow for an additional $24.95.
