According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association, white kitchens remain the most popular look in 2018, and stainless appliances still rule. That said, the white and stainless look can come off looking a little cold.
To balance the chilly looks of a white kitchen, this year, the trend will be toward white kitchens with bold pops of color. Some homeowners are painting their lower cabinets, but often, the color pops are on the appliances.
And the color won’t always be in the finish—sometimes it shows up in the lighting. But regardless of how it happens, everyone will want a splash of kitchen color this year.
Here are some examples.
1. An LG oven
Open an LG oven, and there’s a bright color surprise: the interior is finished in stunning violet-toned cobalt blue. LG says you can use the Speed Clean functionality to clean a lightly-soiled oven in 10 minutes. It’s enough to make you want to learn how to bake.
2. This Thermador Star-Sapphire dishwasher
Yes, the interior lit up blue in last year’s version. But the latest model of this luxury dishwasher lets you light up the interior LEDs with every color of the rainbow by running your finger along a color continuum in the Thermador Home Connect app. Thermador calls this Star Glow functionality, and it’s really pretty.
3. A Perlick column wine fridge
Perlick has been in the commercial refrigeration business for many years, and now, they are venturing into consumer appliances. They have a new column refrigerator that appeals with its commercially-inspired design, flexibility, and novelty. We were taken with the knockout good looks of the wine fridge column, and the the bright blue LED lights that shine through the refrigerator's glass door whenever it’s closed. When you open the door, the lighting changes to white, better to read the wine labels.
4. Our favorite Bosch dishwasher in a black stainless finish
Here at Reviewed, we’ve written a lot about the black stainless steel trend, and a dark appliance can be the highlight of a blah monochrome kitchen. Trouble is, most black stainless appliances have a powder-coated finish, meaning they scratch easily. But now, we’ve discovered that our favorite Bosch 800 series dishwashers are available in scratch-resistant, fingerprint-resistant black stainless. I couldn’t even scratch it up with my wedding ring. (I tried to, in the name of science.) If you’re thinking about livening up the look of your kitchen with a black stainless appliance, you couldn’t do any better than to start with this one.
5. These vibrant Italian appliances
Italian appliance manufacturer SMEG offers their very European-looking Portofino ranges in colors like blazing yellow and red. This goes one step beyond the signature red knobs of a certain high-end range that costs as much as a car.
SMEG has also partnered with high-end designer Dolce & Gabanna to make a refrigerator that's hand-painted to pay tribute to Sicilian folklore. But as you can imagine, it's outside of almost everybody's budget. If you want to add some pretty color to your kitchen, maybe a brightly colored toaster will have to do.
