Apple Store and especially iTunes gift cards are some of the most popular ones out there, and while you might mistake them for one another, there's actually no overlap between the products you can buy with each one. Pick wrong and you could have a disappointed gift recipient come Christmas morning.

Here's the deal, Apple Store gift cards can be used at Apple's online or brick-and-mortar retails stores to buy hardware like iPhones, iPads, Mac laptops, Apple Watches, or Apple TV. iTunes gift cards, on the other hand, are only for buying software on the iTunes Store and App Store, such as music, movies, apps, TV shows, and books or audiobooks.

This comes up a lot, actually, and it's one of the most common mistakes you can make when buying a gift card for someone. If your recipient already owns a device like an iPhone or iPad, they'll probably want an iTunes gift card. But if you want to help your recipient offset the cost of a new device, like a new Macbook, get them an Apple Store gift card instead.
