How we tested

This is the first red light mask I've used in my own home, having previously only done it with aestheticians after facials. I did a 10-minute photosensitivity test on my arm to make sure there was no reaction.

You can use the mask three to five times a week for up to 20 minutes per treatment. I use products with strong actives in my skincare routine at night, so I used the mask in the mornings.

My skin looks drastically different day to day, depending on where I am in my cycle, how much I've slept, and how good I've been about skincare or sun protection. Some days, my biggest concern is firmness, and others, I care more about my fine lines and wrinkles. I like that the Megelin Duo-Lux mask has four modes—wrinkles, skin-toning, inflammation, and daily repair—and that you can combine them.

You can also increase or decrease the brightness or irradiance of each treatment.

Better facial fit than other red light masks

Most red light masks fall into one of two categories: floppy silicone that lies flat, or hard-molded plastic like a Halloween mask. The Megelin Duo-Lux mask offers the perfect medium. It's molded, but made of a lightweight, flexible silicone that adjusts to fit smaller or wider faces. I usually have to cut sheet masks to fit my face better, so I was impressed by how well this mask's contours fit my face without any additional adjustments.

The strap is made of the same lightweight silicone and has a Velcro adjustment and cutouts that leave space around the ears. I have long hair that consistently gets stuck or pinched by normal elastic bands, but I had no rubbing or chafing and found the straps comfortable for the 10- to 20-minute treatments.

What we don't like

Eye protection is not included

Many red light masks include eye shields or eye cups to protect eyes from the bright lights during treatment, but the Megelin Duo-Lux does not. The eye opening is large, so the red lights aren't directly near your eyes, which is a blessing and a curse. If you have sensitive eyes, the red lights are far enough away to stay in your peripheral vision, but you won't see any under-eye skin benefits either.

Charging cord requires a USB-A power adapter that isn't included

If you're anything like me, as soon as the iPhone switched to USB-C, you jumped for joy at the chance to rid yourself of Lightning and USB-A cords and adapters. USB-C has become the standard across tech products released over the last five years.

Unfortunately, the remote for the Megelin Duo-Lux LASER & LED Light Therapy Mask uses a USB-A connector, and a power adapter is not included. I dug through old drawers to find one that thankfully worked, but if you've already rid yourself of old adapters, you'll need to pick up a new DC5V 1.4A adapter to charge the device properly.

It smells plasticky right out of the package

It's not a dealbreaker, but the mask has a strong smell after coming out of the box, a bit like blowing up a pool float in the sun. The smell went away after a few days, but during my first few treatments, it was strong when the mask was on.
