January 16, 2006 – Fujifilm has announced that the FinePix S3 Pro, which previously carried only a 128 MB RAM buffer, can now be upgraded to 256 MB for $379.95 plus tax. The upgrade will also include a "wake-up" feature for the S3 Pro’s vertical shutter release.

The hardware upgrade will improve continuous shooting capabilities from three consecutive frames when shooting in RAW at the widest dynamic range setting of 400% to eight consecutive frames, according to Fujilfilm. When shooting in Standard shooting mode, RAW image capability will jump from 7 to 17 consecutive frames. Fujifilm notes, however, that the interval time between frames will not be changed by the RAM upgrade. Photographers should note that the comparably priced Nikon D200 offers over 20 shots in a burst.

The RAM upgrade also entails a complete replacement of the camera’s memory board. A $30 rebate from Fujifilm is offered, however, if owners allow Fujifilm to keep the camera’s original board.

There is no mention of whether the newer models of the FinePix S3 Pro will come equipped with 256 MB or just the original 128 MB of RAM.
