It seems like everyone is talking about DNA testing these days. Folks all around the world are not only psyched to learn more about who they are, but they're actually using DNA testing to fill in the gaps in their family trees to reveal more about themselves and their relatives than ever before.

The one downside to DNA testing is that it can be pretty expensive. Even AncestryDNA, which is one of the most popular DNA testing kits out there now, is on the pricey side, since the standard kit normally costs $99. But right now, you can get one directly from Ancestry.com for just $59, which is a total steal (and the lowest price we've seen since Black Friday).

This kit can help shed light on your heritage in profound ways, and using it is pretty simple: you just have to spit in a tube that they provide until you reach a marked line, then seal it up and send it back to the Ancestry. You'll have to wait a few weeks to get your results back, but then they give you lots of information about all kinds of things, including your probable ethnicity, ancestry migration patterns, and more. You might even discover a long-lost relative or two.

With more people joining the database every day, AncestryDNA is able to constantly refine its results. Currently, it draws from more than 350 regions and a database of more than 10 million people. Even if you took your DNA test a few years back, your results might be more precise now because they've been continuously updating their geographical data to account for more test results. Although to some the thought of sharing their DNA can immediately trigger concerns about privacy, Ancestry's privacy statement actually makes it clear that they never have access to your personal information and your results will always stay within a secured database, so you can breathe easy.

And because DNA testing is more accessible than ever, people are learning things about themselves that they never even thought possible. For some, it's been absolutely mind-blowing, especially those who grew up believing they were a certain heritage but have since learned through DNA testing that, that's not the case. People are getting an incredible look at how their families have really evolved over the years, as with two of our staffers who recently shared their experiences. While I'm still waiting for the results of my own test to come back, fingers crossed I'll at least still be Irish.

This deal runs until Monday, May 13, so it's right in time for Mother's Day. If you've ever been curious about your genealogy—or you want to give your mom a way to learn more about her own—then this is a great opportunity. Once you've done the initial test, you can even get additional insight into how your DNA affects your characteristics via the new Traits feature, which is now $20 more, but in our opinion, totally worth the extra money for extra insights.
