What to know before buying a garage-ready freezer

What does "garage ready" mean for a freezer?

The difference between a regular and garage ready freezer can be confusing, but it's important to understand so you can make an informed purchase. Garage ready freezers are rated to operate across a much wider temperature range (typically 0°F–110°F) than standard freezers, so the compressor doesn't quit in extreme heat or cold. Without this rating, a regular freezer in an uninsulated garage can fail to keep food frozen in winter or overheat in summer.

Do you need a special freezer for a garage?

If your garage regularly drops below 35°F or rises above 100°F, then the answer is yes. A standard freezer's thermostat can misread ambient temperature and shut the compressor off too early—meaning your food thaws without warning.

What about a garage-ready refrigerator?

The same temperature-range logic applies to fridges. If you're looking for a full second refrigerator for the garage rather than just a freezer, the considerations are similar, but the product options are different. We put together a full guide to garage-ready refrigerators—including what to look for and our top picks.

The Home Depot's fall appliance savings event runs from October 1 to October 21, with savings of $100 to $230 on select appliances.
