The more some things change, the more they stay the same. That was apparent at the debut of Kenmore's 2013 lineup.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the brand, whose name first appeared on a sewing machine in 1913, Kenmore brought out appliances from throughout its history. In 1927, the company that became Whirlpool began manufacturing washing machines for the Kenmore brand, which was sold exclusively at Sears. Today, Kenmore partners with numerous manufacturers including Whirlpool, LG, Frigidaire/Electrolux, and Panasonic.

From Depression-era stoves to Reagan-era refrigerators, each of the old appliances on display shared design features with those on the market today. Some are great ideas that haven't gotten old, while others are still under development.

Although appliance designs have changed a great deal, the method of purchasing them is familiar. Back then, Sears did much of its appliance business from customers who purchased them sight unseen through the iconic Sears Catalog, which disappeared in 1993. Today, consumers are getting increasingly comfortable with the idea of buying appliances online without ever stepping foot in a retail store.
