Some of the most devoted food followings and rivalries in the nation form around taco chains. Maybe it's the green chile from the Southwest, fish tacos on the California coast, or fast-food options that hit a nostalgic spot in your heart—everyone has a soft or hard (shell) spot in their heart for this treasured food.

Instead of us naming our favorites, we want to hear from you during the Readers' Choice Awards. Don't just tell us your favorite; add in why it's so special.

Voting period ends on August 12, 2026. We'll announce the winners on August 20.

Nominee #1: Bartaco

Bartaco brings a coastal sensibility to the fast-casual taco format that sets it apart from most competitors. The aesthetic is beach-inspired and unhurried, the menu leans toward fresh, high-quality ingredients, and the experience reads as upscale without requiring full-service prices. Operating across multiple states with a concentration on the East Coast, the chain has built a following among diners who want a taco experience that feels curated rather than standard. A full bar with cocktails and craft beer, alongside the food, makes it a destination for groups as much as for a quick lunch stop.

Nominee #2: Chronic Tacos

What started as a Southern California concept has grown into a multi-state chain without losing its allegiance to authentic, made-to-order Mexican recipes. Chronic Tacos operates on a philosophy of fresh ingredients and traditional preparation (not the Tex-Mex approximation that often passes for Mexican food in fast-casual settings). The Baja Sauce has become popular among regulars who've made it their standard order. With locations reaching well beyond its California origins, the chain has found that its format—genuine flavors, real ingredients, and built to order—travels well.

Nominee #3: Condado Tacos

Columbus, Ohio, doesn't get enough credit as a taco town, but Condado Tacos has given it a strong case. The chain's made-to-order model lets diners build their own combinations from a wide range of proteins, toppings, and sauces. The vibrantly painted stores give each location its own identity while continuing a consistent kitchen standard. Starting in Ohio and expanding across the Midwest, Condado has proven that getting the food right draws in new customers. The panel recognized it for bridging quality and scale in a category where that balance is harder to maintain than it looks.

Nominee #4: Del Taco

Del Taco occupies a specific and arguably underappreciated lane in the fast-food taco category: a menu that covers both Mexican and American comfort food without hedging on either. The crinkle-cut fries alongside a classic taco—a combination unavailable anywhere else—have become something of a signature, and the regulars who know it treat it as imperative. Operating approximately 600 locations primarily in western states, Del Taco has been doing its own thing for decades with a consistency that a devoted following counts on. Fresh-made guacamole, beef burritos, and a full breakfast menu round out a format that earns its place in the category on food alone.

Nominee #5: District Taco

Founded in the Washington, D.C., area and built around a Yucatan-inspired menu, District Taco has drawn in more diners across the mid-Atlantic states by taking its regional sourcing and cultural reference point seriously. The tacos are fully customizable, the ingredients are fresh, and the flavor profile draws on Mexican tradition rather than approximating it. What distinguishes District Taco from generic fast-casual competitors is the specificity of the Yucatan influence, giving the menu a character that's harder to find than the standard Tex-Mex defaults that dominate the category.

Nominee #6: Filiberto's Mexican Food

A staple of the Southwest since 1993, Filiberto's Mexican Food belongs to the storied family of "Berto's" Mexican restaurants that has fed generations of Arizona residents and visitors around the clock. The format is no-frills and the portions are generous. You can get big burritos, carne asada plates, and traditional Mexican food at prices that make the quality feel almost too good. Operating primarily across Arizona and neighboring southwestern states, Filiberto's holds a place in regional food culture that goes beyond basic convenience.

Nominee #7: Fuzzy's Taco Shop

Fuzzy's Taco Shop built its reputation in Texas before expanding into 17 states, but the menu reads as anything but generic. The Baja-style fish and shrimp tacos are the star: crispy or grilled, finished with fresh toppings and a garlic sauce that regulars request on everything. The breakfast tacos hold their own alongside the seafood, and the overall approach leans toward a sophisticated fast-casual experience rather than a quick-serve approximation. Fresh, creative ingredients throughout and a relaxed atmosphere that draws as much from beach taco culture as it does from its Texas roots make Fuzzy's difficult to categorize... which is probably why it works.

Nominee #8: Panchero's Mexican Grill

Panchero's Mexican Grill does one thing that sets it apart from every other burrito and taco concept in the fast-casual category: the tortillas are made fresh in-store, pressed to order, in front of the customer. The result is a noticeably different texture and flavor than the pre-made alternatives that dominate the format. Beyond the tortilla, the model is familiar—pick your protein, toppings, and sauces while the line moves quickly—but the foundation ingredient gets the attention it deserves. Panchero's Mexican Grill is based in Iowa and operates primarily across the Midwest.

Nominee #9: Rubio's Coastal Grill

Rubio's Coastal Grill originates from a Baja California fish taco stand that founder Ralph Rubio encountered during a San Diego State spring break trip in 1983, and the fish taco has remained the center of the menu ever since. Now operating approximately 80 locations across California, Arizona, and Nevada, the chain is concentrated in the western markets where the Baja coastal style resonates most naturally. The fish tacos remain the draw: crispy or grilled, topped with fresh cabbage, pico, and white sauce, they represent one of the more genuine interpretations of the Baja format at a fast-casual price point.

Nominee #10: Rusty Taco

Rusty Taco built its reputation in Dallas on a street-style taco that doesn't overcomplicate the formula, using quality fillings, fresh tortillas, and a neighborhood atmosphere. That approach has carried into its expansion across the Southwest and beyond, with each location keeping the kind of local, community-embedded feel that larger chains rarely achieve at scale. The menu covers classics and a few surprises, and the faithfulness to freshness and consistency keeps regulars coming back.

Nominee #11: Taco Bueno

A Texas original since 1967, Taco Bueno has built its following in the south-central states on a Tex-Mex format that keeps things basic and satisfying. The beef burritos are the anchor—hearty, well-seasoned, and built for value—and the menu covers the full Tex-Mex range from tacos and quesadillas to nachos and combination plates. Operating across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, and Missouri, the chain continues to serve the regional market it has occupied for nearly six decades.

Nominee #12: Taco Del Mar

Taco Del Mar opened its first location in Seattle in 1992 and has remained most concentrated in the Pacific Northwest, with the majority of its current locations in Washington state. The Baja-inspired menu centers on the coastal Mexican format of fish and meat tacos, burritos, and bowls assembled to order from fresh ingredients along a customizable line. Seaside-themed decor and an emphasis on Baja coastal flavors give it a character that sets it apart from generic fast-casual competitors.

Nominee #13: Taco Time Northwest

The Taco Time Northwest menu emphasizes fresh, locally sourced ingredients—pinto beans from Washington State farms, proteins and sauces prepped in-house daily—alongside regional favorites like the Crisp Burrito and Tater Fries. For Pacific Northwesterners, Taco Time Northwest carries the kind of multigenerational loyalty that belongs entirely to its own corner of the market.

A family-owned institution with roots going back to 1962, Taco Time Northwest has operated independently from the broader TacoTime brand since 1979, when the Tonkin family established Accord Inc. and gained autonomous rights to operate in western Washington. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, the chain runs approximately 75 locations concentrated in the greater Seattle area and western Washington.

Nominee #14: Tacombi

Tacombi built its concept around the culture and atmosphere of a Mexican taqueria and was, in fact, founded in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. After coming to New York it expanded into multiple markets while maintaining its genuine Yucatan vibes. The tacos are made with care, the ingredients are fresh, and the ambiance reflects the neighborhood taqueria feel the brand explicitly references. What has driven rapid growth is a combination of quality and cultural authenticity that diners recognize immediately; this isn't a fast-casual approximation of Mexican street food, but a considered homage to it.

Nominee #15: Tijuana Flats

Tijuana Flats has been a Florida institution for decades, with more than 65 locations primarily across the state and additional outposts in Alabama, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The fast-casual format delivers customizable tacos and a full menu of Tex-Mex favorites in colorful, vibrant stores. And the hot sauce bar, stocked with an extensive selection from mild to incendiary, is the thing regulars tend to mention first.

Nominee #16: Torchy's Tacos

Torchy's Tacos started as a single food truck in Austin, Texas, in 2006, and the story of how it got from there to a nationwide chain is largely a story about the tacos themselves. The menu is built around unexpected, bold combinations, like creative fillings paired with fresh ingredients and sauces that don't exist anywhere else, and the green chile queso has developed its own following that would justify a visit even without the tacos. New customers tend to become regulars quickly, because the food is difficult to find elsewhere.

Nominee #17: Velvet Taco

Velvet Taco takes the taco format somewhere most chains don't attempt: a globally inspired, chef-driven menu that treats the tortilla as a vehicle for serious culinary creativity. The lineup rotates and includes combinations drawn from cuisines well outside the Mexican tradition—Korean BBQ, Nashville hot chicken, tikka masala—assembled with the care of a sit-down restaurant but delivered in a fast-casual setting. Operating across multiple states, the chain has found a market among diners who want something different from the standard menu. It's a concept with a clear point of view—the taco, reimagined without limits.

Nominee #18: White Duck Taco Shop

White Duck Taco Shop operates a small number of locations across North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina, and the consistency across all of them is what the loyal following tends to cite first. The tacos are inventive combinations that go well beyond the expected, and the quality holds up across every location. Their margaritas draw their own praise alongside the food. White Duck Taco Shop earns the "fancy taco joint" label without the pretension that usually comes with it, and the menu creativity keeps regulars coming back to see what's new.
