How to make slime quickly and easily—without glue or borax

With three common ingredients, you can be on your way to slime!

Slime, the DIY toy that you can make with common household ingredients, is a craze that’s sweeping the nation. Kids love slime’s texture and its gooey, stretchy tendencies; parents love that it’s cheap to make, comes in infinite varieties, and is relatively easy to clean up.

Spurred by my recent slime!fails, I looked for even easier slime recipes that even I couldn’t mess up.

In my research, I found two simple recipes: one is somewhat edible, the other is so gooey and weird that you probably wouldn’t want to eat it. Both skip the glue and borax found in most slime recipes, making them much easier and simpler for younger kids.

Somewhat edible slime recipe

This recipe, which is flavored with instant pudding mix, is good for dough-y, stretchy, vaguely tasty slime.

Ingredients:
-1/4 cup instant pudding mix
-1 cup corn starch
-2/3 cup warm water (original recipe calls for 1/3 warm water, I needed more)

As mentioned in the original recipe, you may need to add more cornstarch if the slime is too wet, or more water if the slime is too rigid. Fortunately, this recipe allows for some latitude in the amount of each ingredient.

Directions:
1. Add instant pudding mix and half of the cornstarch into a mixing bowl.
2. Add 1/3 cup of warm water and stir until it starts to form a solid ball.
3. Add the other 1/3 cup of warm water, and continue mixing.

  1. Add in the remaining cornstarch a little bit at a time, and continue mixing until it starts to become sticky.
  2. Once it’s reached the sticky stage, sprinkle some corn starch on your hands, and then pick up the sticky blob. Knead it in your hands while adding in any remaining corn starch. You will know the slime is done when you can squeeze it without it leaving sticky slime residue on your hands.

Your instant pudding flavored slime is now complete! Squish it and stretch it to your heart’s content.

As I said earlier, it is technically edible, but it has a weird texture and tastes strange. I hadn’t really thought about what chocolate-flavored chalk would taste like, but now I know.

Technically edible but visually unappetizing slime

This recipe is a fascinating type of slime. It’s a non-Newtonian fluid; it can be rigid (like a solid) and it can flow (like a liquid).

Ingredients
-1 part water (I used 2/3 cup water)
-1.5 to 2 parts cornstarch (I used 1 cup cornstarch)

  1. Pour the water into a bowl, then add the cornstarch a little bit at a time, and continue stirring
  2. If you notice blobs starting to form in the liquid when you add the cornstarch, continue stirring until the lumps go away
  3. Eventually, you’ll start to notice that the act of stirring is becoming difficult; if this happens, stir more slowly

Your slime is done. Enjoy!

You’ll know it’s at the perfect texture when you poke the slime. If it seems hard when you first press your finger in, but then it flows around your finger, and pulling your finger out of it is accompanied by the sucking sensation, your slime is done!

Where the previous recipe makes slime that is gooey and stretchy, this recipe makes slime that is truly slimy in nature. Its dual solid/liquid nature is most evident when you grab a handful of it and make a puddle on a flat surface. If you move your hand through it quickly, it turns into a solid, allowing you to pick it up easily. However, once you stop trying to move your fingers through it quickly, it turns back into a puddle in your hands.

With just cornstarch and water as its only ingredients, this slime is technically edible, but since it looks like weird snot, you may not be so keen to put it into your mouth. If you’re really curious, though, I’d recommend eating a little bit and then waiting for a while, so that you have an idea as to whether you’re one of the people who may have trouble digesting raw starch, or one of the lucky ones that it doesn’t bother.
