With millions of products and the excellent Prime program, Amazon has become the go-to destination for most people when it comes to shopping online. Most people I know buy nearly all their gifts through Amazon now, skipping the long lines and herd mentality of the big box stores.
But actually finding what to buy on Amazon is a challenge. One easy way to find great gift ideas? See what everyone else is buying. To do that, we've combed through Amazon's lists of best-selling and most-wished-for products, as well as what we're seeing readers purchase, to find the most popular gifts on Amazon this year so you can cross off those last few names on your list.
Despite never going on sale, Cards Against Humanity is consistently one of Amazon's best-selling items. It's atop Amazon's list of the most wished for toys and games, and it's easy to see why: the game is a laugh riot. If you're shopping for someone who already has the base set, you can also pick up accessory packs to add more cards.
- Cards Against Humanity ($25)
- Expansion Packs ($10 each): First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, or Sixth
- Expansion Boxes ($20 each): Red Box, Green Box, or Blue Box
The Amazon Echo is by far the gift I get asked about the most in my family, because people are starting to realize just how useful and fun a digital assistant can be. The Echo is the full-size cylindrical device while the Dot is the more affordable, puck-shaped one.
We have an amazing, full guide on everything Alexa can do, but around the office we've asked Alexa about our schedules, the weather, to play songs from services like Spotify, and to control smart devices like lights and switches.
Sticking with the Alexa theme is the new Amazon Fire TV Stick. This is a simple, affordable streaming stick that fits into the HDMI port on your TV and lets you stream services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Instant Video, and more right to your TV.
While we like the Roku Premiere better, if you're looking for a full-fledged streaming option, the Fire TV Stick has one unique trick: fully integrated Alexa support. That means you can use the microphone on the remote to search for TVs, movies, or to do anything that the Echo and Echo Dot can do through your TV.
We absolutely adore the Fujifilm Instax Mini cameras; they're affordable, they're fun, and they're perfect for kids. The Mini 8 has been one of the best-selling cameras on Amazon all year because it captures everything that's great about Instax but only costs $59.99 on sale.
You'll need to buy film to go with it, but the film packs make great stocking stuffers.
The PlayStation 4 Slim has been exceedingly popular this year, besting (in terms of Amazon sales) the more powerful consoles out like the new PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One S.
This bundle is also a great deal right now, getting you the console, a controller, and Uncharted 4, which is a stellar game that I absolutely loved. Amazon is also running a limited-time promotion including a free year of PlayStation Plus, which gives you access to free games every month (you also need it to play multiplayer games online.)
- PlayStation 4 Slim 500GB Uncharted 4 Bundle ($269)
- Most Popular PlayStation 4 Games on Amazon ($59.99 and Under)
While The Secret Life of Pets is the top movie right now on Amazon, most of the others on the most wished-for and best-seller lists are new movies. Just a word to the wise: many of these movies are still full-price items, so if you're just browsing for yourself, you can probably wait and get a deal after the holidays.
- The Secret Life of Pets ($34.98)
- Finding Dory ($19.99)
- Captain America: Civil War ($19.99)
- Star Trek: Beyond ($19.94)
- Jason Bourne ($19.99)
- Suicide Squad ($24.96)
- Harry Potter: The Complete 8-Film Box Set ($54.99)
While the best-selling book list on Amazon has been all over the place recently, the most popular titles right now are Diary of a Wimpy Kid #11: Double Down by Jeff Kinney, The Undoing Project by Michael Lewis, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: The Original Screenplay by J.K. Rowling.
Here are some of the other highlights from Amazon's list of the most wished-for books right now:
- Harry Potter and the Cursed Child by J.K. Rowling ($17.98)
- Talking as Fast as I Can by Lauren Graham ($16.66)
- First 100 Words by Roger Priddy ($3.92)
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Illustrated) by J.K. Rowling ($23.99)
- Atlas Obscura by Joshua Foer (17.50)
- Harry Potter Paperback Box Set by J.K. Rowling ($49.39)
While physical discs aren't as popular as they used to be, they're still great, affordable stocking stuffers. Especially Hamilton and The Hamilton Mixtape. Just buy a bunch of copies and give them to everyone. They'll love it, we promise.
