The Five Burner Pro Harmony Range is Thermador's answer to home cooks seeking a 30-inch professional-grade range with burners aplenty. We had the opportunity to spend some time with the new Pro Harmony Range this week at KBIS, and while we can't make a full assessment just yet, these are our first impressions.

Design & Usability

Being a professional-style luxury machine, the Five Burner Pro Harmony sports a bulkier, heavier build than the average range; think straight lines, hard edges, and near-bulletproof material. The front of the unit is comprised mostly of brushed metal, but I didn't get the impression that it's a smudge-proof steel, given the copious fingerprints spread all over it.

Two of the five burners feature Thermador's ExtraLow simmering setting.

The Pro Harmony Range isn't as sleek and modern-looking as some of the more fashionable high-end units we've seen at KBIS this year, but it's not trying to be. The style screams "function" over "form," and the end result is an appliance that is always communicating its reliability to the user.

The Pro Harmony Range isn't as sleek as some of the high-end ranges we've seen at KBIS this year, but it's not trying to be.

For instance, the knobs on the range feel heavy and securely fixed to the body, creating a reassuring sense of control. The switch for the oven light looks like it'd be right at home in a submarine. It's not particularly sexy, but you'll always know whether it's on or off.

Like the rest of the unit, the oven door possesses considerable heft. The interior is stuffed with three racks, the lowest of which is on a rail system that operates quickly and efficiently.

Features

The Pro Harmony Range is equipped with five of Thermador's star-shaped burners, which we've previously found to distribute heat more effectively than conventionally shaped burners.

Two of the star burners include a special low-heat setting. Ideal for simmering, Thermador's ExtraLow feature maintains a steady low simmer without scorching the food at the bottom of a pan.

Each burner on the Pro Harmony Range features the StarBurner shape, which distributes heat better than traditional burners.

The most significant innovation comes in the form of the Harmony Pro's venting technology, which reduces back wall temperatures by as much as 25%. This allows users to install the unit against a kitchen wall with zero clearance, which in turn increases flexibility for interior designers.

Then, of course, there's the luxury of having five burners at your disposal; a convenience that cannot be overstated.

The Verdict

Naturally, we can't assess the performance of the Thermador Five Burner Pro Harmony Range until we put it through our gauntlet of tests in our lab. But at a quick glance, this powerful machine appears to have a lot going for it.

Serious home cooks interested in a high-end, professional-style range would be wise to keep the Pro Harmony Range on their radar. It launches later this year, with availability expected in June.
