Each one is more precious than the next

Is there anything cuter than a dog wearing a silly Halloween costume? I think not! My precious angel, Addy, is accustomed to being dressed up in hokey outfits during the holidays, and Halloween is going to be extra fun this year, as our family recently expanded by four paws. Now I have two dogs to play dress-up with!

To get in the spooky spirit, Addy and her little brother, Ace, helped me test out some of Chewy’s most popular dog costumes, and—fair warning—the results might just make your heart explode from all the cuteness. If you’re looking for a Halloween costume for your dog, here are some of our favorites!

(For reference, Addy is a fairly small Golden Retriever—she weighs around 50 pounds, and most of the costumes we got were extra-large. Ace is a 4-month-old Golden Retriever pup, and he currently weighs around 25 pounds and wore a size medium.)

Don't worry, Addy doesn't sting!

  • Size: XL
  • Our rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

Pretty much every time we go outside, I find myself yelling at Addy not to eat bees—or “spicy sky raisins,” if you’re fluent in dog-speak. However, I have to say that she herself makes an absolutely adorable little bumble bee.

This costume has two parts—a body piece and a headpiece—and it was super easy to put on, as the body piece has adjustable velcro straps. The antennas have wire inside to help them stand up, and the headpiece fit snuggly so it didn’t slide backwards off her head. Overall, we loved this costume and would definitely wear it again!

Behold: The cutest pumpkin to put on your front porch.

  • Size: XL
  • Our rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

If I had to guess, I’d say this cute pumpkin costume was Addy’s favorite of the bunch, as it’s comfortable for her to wear. It includes a jack-o-lantern jacket with sparkly green leaves around the collar, and the hat is totally adorable with its little curly stem.

The costume is easy to put on, but you’ll probably have trouble getting your dog to keep the hat on. It tightens with an elastic cord, but every time I turned around, Addy had knocked it off her head. She truly didn’t mind the body piece, though!

3. A totally tubular turtle

Gimme some fin, Addy.

Size: XXL Rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃

All I could think of while Addy was wearing this costume was Crush, the super-rad turtle from Finding Nemo. Koo-koo ka-choo, am I right?

We went with an XXL for Addy’s sea turtle look, but it ended up being a tad too big. The head piece falls down over her eyes, and the straps are a little loose around her torso. Still, the costume is undeniably cute, and Addy seemed really comfortable wearing it. My only complaint is that the shell’s fabric was a little bluer than it looked online.

4. A fluffy pink pig

Is she not the cutest little piggy you've ever seen?

  • Size: XL
  • Our rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

This was my favorite costume of the ones we tested, not only because I love pink but also because I always say Addy was a pig in her past life. She loves nothing more than being dirty, wet, and muddy, so I think this costume fits her personality perfectly!

The pig costume has two pieces, and the body was easy to velcro around Addy’s torso. The headpiece fit snuggly and stayed in place, and I loved that the ears stuck out. Like several of the other costumes, this one wasn’t long enough to cover Addy’s whole torso, but I still think it’s absolutely precious.

5. A crazy-eyed red crustacean

Bring in the dancing lobsters!

Size: XXL Rating: 🎃🎃

I’m not sure if she was just trying to get into character, but this costume made Addy a little crabby! The lobster’s head piece has ear holes, which I thought she would like, but she gave it a 0/10. She just kept pawing at it and would barely sit still for photos!

If we were to use this costume, we’d probably end up skipping the head piece and just using the body suit, which has pinchy red claws and lots of dangling legs. It stayed on well and actually covered Addy’s whole torso, making her look like an adorable little lobster.

6. An incredibly regal rainbow

All she needs is a pot of gold.

Size: XXL Rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

Out of the three costumes Addy tested this year, the rainbow was hands-down my favorite. Addy acted like she was the queen of the world while rocking this vibrant get-up, and I love how colorful and shiny it is!

Each side of the costume has a rainbow that holds its shape thanks to a piece of stiff material inside, and you can fluff up the metallic clouds to make them a little more poofy. The sun headpiece doesn’t stand up quite as well as others we’ve tested, but I think the costume would be just as cute without it.

7. A swashbuckling pirate with a hook hand

You don't want to cross this wily pirate!

  • Size: XL
  • Our rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃

Similar to the Chewy delivery costume, this pirate costume is designed to give your dog “arms” that stick off to the sides. Again, I think the whole idea works better on small dogs, so the arms and legs are proportional, but overall, I liked this costume a lot.

There’s only one body piece, so it was easy to put on, and the hat fit nicely onto Addy’s head, staying in place easily. However, we can’t give it a whole five pumpkins, as it really only looks good from straight-on.

8. Everyone’s favorite female superhero: Wonder Woman

This costume was huge on Addy, so you may want to size down!

This costume was huge on Addy, so you may want to size down!

  • Size: XXL
  • Our rating: 🎃🎃

Addy was ready and willing to be the super-dog that the world needs, but unfortunately, this costume was another flop. We got the XXL based on the size chart in the product description, but the costume was huge on her!

The skirt piece of the bodysuit started at her tail, and when she walked, it ended up trailing behind her. Plus, the crown had a very large elastic band with minimal adjustability, and there was really no logical way to secure it around her head.

9. A derpy dinosaur

This costume is amazing, if only because it's incredibly awkward.

This costume is amazing, if only because it's incredibly awkward.

  • Size: XL
  • Our rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃

I’m not going to lie: My boyfriend and I laughed so hard that we cried when Addy put this costume on. She just looked—and acted—so awkward! My derpy little dinosaur.

The costume consists of a large body piece and a matching hood, and you’ll definitely want to measure your pooch before you buy it, as it’s important that the body piece isn’t too short. Otherwise, you’ll have a hard time getting your dog’s legs through all four holes—it was the tiniest bit tight on Addy, but still worked.

10. A super shiny snail with wonky eyes

Snailed it!

Size: Medium Rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃

All the other costumes can go home, because this one won Halloween. Ace’s snail costume was an instant hit, and it’s every bit as well-made as it is adorable. The teal shell is made from a fun metallic fabric with the animal’s signature swirl on it, and I was impressed that it stayed standing the whole time Ace was wearing it!

The costume has a chest strap that keeps the shell from falling over, and the small head piece fit surprisingly well, too. The two little eyes really took the outfit to a whole new level of cute.

11. Everyone’s favorite lovable bear

Ace is ready for an adventure in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Size: Medium Rating: 🎃🎃🎃🎃

I was really looking forward to seeing Ace this sweet Winnie the Pooh outfit. The medium was a little small on him—give it a week and it probably won’t fit him at all—but it made him look like a loveable little bear. Unlike other costumes, the head piece is a full hood that you pull over and can cinch under your dog’s chin, and it stays in place much better than ones that use elastic straps.

12. A bushy, fierce lion’s mane

"Rawr," says Addy, a fierce lioness.

"Rawr," says Addy, a fierce lioness.

  • Size: Large
  • Our rating: 🎃🎃🎃

Last, but not least, a lion costume, which was practically made for Addy as she has the perfect coloring to be a fierce feline for Halloween. As expected, she looked truly adorable wearing the headpiece, but she genuinely hated it! Even with its adjustable elastic, there was no way she would keep this on for any length of time. Plus, the ears are too far back, and they don’t stand up enough for my liking. Unfortunately, this costume is currently sold out on the Chewy website.
