June 12, 2007 – Building on the single-pass laser technology released with the HL-4000 series color laser printers in March of 2007, Brother International today announced the release of two new printers in the MFC-9000 Color Laser Multifunction Center series, the MFC-9440CN and the MFC-9840CDW. These new printers bring all the powerful multifunction capabilities—print, scan, copy, and fax—to an affordable street price of $699 and $849, respectively. The MFC-9440CN will be available this month and the MFC-9840CDW will be released in September of this year.

These printers feature print and copy speeds of 21 ppm and 17 cpm, respectively—on par or subpar with many other color lasers regardless of price point. The MFC-9440 and the MFC-9840 exceed their peers in dpi, with a maximum print resolution of 2400 x 600 dpi and a maximum scan resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi. Both units have a standard input paper tray capacity of 250 sheets, expandable to 800 sheets, a 50-sheet manual feed tray, and 150-sheet output tray, expandable to 500 sheets. High-speed USB 2.0 and 10/100 BaseTx Ethernet connectivity are standard, and both units are Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.2.4 compatible. In addition to the typical USB and Ethernet connectivity standard on many other Brother printers and most other laser printers in this class, the 9000 series also features a USB port that allows interface with flash drives and PictBridge cameras, a feature not typically seen on laser printers. The MFC-9440CN features 64 megabytes of memory, a letter-size scanner platen, a 35-page auto document feeder, a 2-line LCD display, and 16 one-touch fax memory button locations. The MFC-9840CDW ramps it up a notch with additional memory of 128 megabytes, 802.11 b/g wireless interface, a legal-size scanner platen, automatic duplexing, a 50-page auto document feeder, a 5-line LCD display, and 40 one-touch fax memory button locations. As for toner, both multifunction centers come with 17,000-page capacity standard cartridges and a drum unit. Replacement standard and high-yield toner packages are available for the MFC-9000 printers. Black cartridges are available in 2,500-page and 5,000-page yields, for $59.99 and $92.99, respectively. Three individual color cartridges will be available in 1,500-page and 4,000-page yields for $69.99 and $129.99, respectively.
