Epson has announced the Stylus Photo R3000, a new photo printer that can handle up to 13 by 19 inch paper up to 1.3 mm thick. The new printer uses nine individual ink cartridges, with the new UltraChrome K3 ink and two black ink cartridges (photo and document black).
The new printer is designed for high-end photographers and artists who want to create oversized prints, so the printing mechanism can manage paper sizes of up to 13 by 19 inches. The paper can also be up to 1.3 mm (0.05 inches) thick, which allows for the use of a wide range of art and textured papers. If you use Epson's own roll papers, prints of up to 13 by 44 inches can be created. Epson claims that the printer can produce an 8 by 10 print in 1 minute 33 seconds, and a 13 by 19-inch print in 2 minutes and 30 seconds, printing in the superfine print mode.
The print head has 180 nozzles, creating a maximum resolution of 5760 by 1440 dots per inch, with a minimum drop size of 2 picoliters. There are 9 separate ink cartridges: photo black, matte black, cyan, vivid magenta, yellow, light cyan, vivid light magenta, light black and light light black. The new additions there are the two vivid inks and the two light black cartridges (which the rest of the world refers to as gray). Epson claims that the vivid magenta inks provide a wider color gamut, while the light black and light light black cartridges provide a wider range of shades for black and white prints without using other colors. All of the inks are pigment-based, and each of the cartridges contains 25.9 ml of ink, but Epson has not yet published any details on the number of pages that you might get out of the cartridges.
The Photo Stylus 3000 also includes a USB port, Ethernet port and 802.11 b/g/n wireless, allowing it to connect the majority of home or office networks, both wired and wireless. Drivers are supplied for both Windows and Mac OS use. The Epson Stylus Photo R3000 will be priced at around $849 and will be released in March.
