Epson Introduces Stylus NX400 in a New Line of All-in-Ones

The Epson Stylus NX400 AiO, which is capable of printing, scanning and copying, is the first model of a new generation of All-in-One printers, according to Epson. The Epson Stylus NX400 comes with DURABrite ink which Epson claims will reduce smudging, fading, and smearing due to water and highlighting. Plain paper prints, Epson claims will last up to six times longer than those from comparable competing manufacturers. The Epson Stylus NX400 is available for an estimated $99.99.
Epson claims that the Stylus NX400 has print speeds up to 34 pages per minute for black and color documents and up to 26 seconds per print for 4x6 inch borderless photographs, which translates into 2.3 photographs per minute. Epson also claims that the Stylus NX400 can produce black and color copies in up to 30 copies per minute. If these numbers are true, then the Epson Stylus NX400 can rival laserjet printers, which produce some of the fastest prints in the personal and home-office printer category, but we won’t know for sure until we test it.
The Stylus NX400 comes with Epson’s MicroPiezo print head technology, which Epson claims is a smart nozzle that produces three different sizes of ink droplets. Epson claims this technology makes printing graphics and other documents more efficient, since fewer nozzles may be needed.
For ink, the Stylus NX400 uses segregated ink cartridges based on color. Although this may be a tedious system in terms of replacing each individual ink at different times, overall it can end up being more cost effective based on the cost of ink. Epson sells the basic color inks for $12.34 each and black for $16.99. The Stylus NX400 requires three colors: yellow, cyan and magenta. For two cents more, Epson sells a multi-pack of the DURABrite color inks for $37.04, which is a value comparatively. Epson also offers high-capacity black and color inks for this printer. Having this sort of ink variation is a definite plus, since not every printer is made compatible with various types of inks and multi-packs.
For the actual unit, the Stylus NX400 features a 2.5-inch LCD monitor. This calls for little excitement since other manufacturers like HP are offering 3.5-inch touchscreen monitors, specifically the HP Photosmart D7460, which retails for $124.99. However, the HP D7460 is incapable of scanning and copying.
