Do you or someone you love carry an EpiPen? If the answer is yes, you may want to check out Veta, a smart EpiPen case and corresponding app launched at CES 2016 by Aterica. This smart case provides peace of mind with monitoring capabilities, video guidance and an alert network.

The Veta case has a built-in temperature sensor. It sends you an alert when your EpiPen gets too hot or cold, potentially affecting the efficacy of the medicine inside. Blinking lights and beeps help you locate your EpiPen if you misplace your Veta or lose it at the bottom of a bag.

Pairing the Veta with a smartphone (iOS or Android) or bluetooth tablet gives you access to a number of other alerts. Type in the expiration date of your EpiPen, and Veta will remind you when it’s time for a new prescription. Have a habit of forgetting your EpiPen at home? Veta will send you a notification as soon as your paired mobile device moves out of range of your Veta case.

Aterica currently offers Veta cases in yellow and green, with an accompanying Veta app.

The Veta app lets you set up a support network of phone numbers and create corresponding notification rules for each one. Seconds after an EpiPen is removed from its Veta case, the app will notify the support network that an anaphylactic event may have taken place.

The app also offers video guidance for how to administer an EpiPen, provides directions to the nearest hospital from your current location, and offers other support such as grocery shopping tips and restaurant recommendations for people with food allergies.

{{amazon name="Rescue Shot Case Epipen Case (Green)", asin="B00W28946Y", align="right"}} Veta is currently only available as a single case, a slight disappointment given that many people carry two EpiPens on advice from their doctors. At a price point of $59 per case, plus an additional monthly fee for the connected app services, purchasing two or more cases could get costly. That being said, the technology in the Veta case will ease many of the daily concerns for people with EpiPens. It could especially provide peace of mind for parents whose children are old enough to carry their own EpiPens.

Veta comes in two colors, yellow and green, to match EpiPens and EpiPen Jrs. It uses AAA batteries that should be replaced yearly, just like the EpiPen inside. It is available for pre-order today at aterica.com and is expected to ship in Q1 of 2016.
