I'm no stranger to danger, which is why I've always let my iPhone roam the wild without a case. I've always loved the way smartphones look in their natural form, and frankly, I'm suffering from the delusion that I won't one day accidentally drop my phone on the ground like a great, big doofus. Without an Apple Care plan, I know that I'm tempting fate. Deep down, I recognize that this type of thinking is both arrogant and foolish.

In short: I am an idiot. Seriously—don't be like me.

If you've just spent a pretty penny on a brand new iPhone 8 or an iPhone 8 Plus, you really ought to protect it.

When it comes to iPhone cases, it can be tough to separate the wheat from the chaff. We've narrowed it down to a handful of choices that should please everyone, whether you're looking for something minimal or heavy-duty.

1. Caseology iPhone 8 slim case (several color variants)

This handsome iPhone 8 case from Caseology is slim enough to fit in your pocket but durable enough to earn its "military grade" distinction.

The case itself is a tough-as-nails, scratch-resistant acrylic and has passed several rounds of drop testing. At around $12, you won't be breaking the bank, either

The transparent model will suit any color variant of the iPhone 8 nicely, but gray, black, and rose gold models (holdovers from the iPhone 7) are also available.

2. Ranvoo frame-only case for iPhone 8 (several color variants)

If you're looking for minimal protection that won't cover up your iPhone 8's glass back, consider this frame-only bumper case from Ranvoo.

Its no-frills design protects the iPhone 8's camera hump when it's placed on a surface.

Due to its frame-only design, this probably isn't a good pick for folks who are looking for something more heavy-duty, though it should offer a good amount of protection for casual, everyday use.

3. OtterBox Defender Series iPhone 8 case (several color variants)

If you do consider yourself somewhat of an outdoorsy person (or you just want an absolute monster of a case for your iPhone 8), consider the Defender Series from OtterBox.

Known for its no-nonsense approach to bulky, beefy smartphone cases, OtterBox has earned the trust and admiration of people for its emphasis on durability. This OtterBox case for iPhone 8 features three layers of protection, a built-in screen protector, and enough color options to please everyone, regardless of their aesthetic.

At around $47, it's certainly not the cheapest option around, but it's ridiculously tough and comes with a one-year warranty.

Note: Due to this case's bulk, it's unlikely that you'll be able to charge your iPhone 8 wirelessly while it's in this case, so plan accordingly!

4. Spigen flexible, slim iPhone 8 case (several color variants)

Spigen is one of the most trusted names in smartphone cases, and this ultra-slim, ultra-simple design gets rave reviews for good reason.

The case itself is a flexible piece of thermoplastic polyurethane that absorbs the shock of minor drops and protects the back of your iPhone 8 from scratching. We recommend it for minimal protection from daily mishaps.

It's available in several colors and patterns, including a rather delightful variant with cherry blossoms.

5. Caseology iPhone 8 Plus slim case (transparent with color trim)

So, you sprang for the iPhone 8 Plus, with its dual camera lenses and big, phablet-sized build. This, my friend, was a very fine choice. But don't let that investment turn into heartbreak. When it comes to protective cases, Caseology has you covered yet again.

It's essentially the same as its smaller, iPhone 8-compatible case, except it'll fit that ginormous 8 Plus you just landed.

Note: Three of the four available color options (Rose Gold, Jet Black, and Matte Black) were designed to match the color variants of last year's iPhone 7 Plus.

Caseology is offering this case in gold (to match the gold-toned iPhone 8 Plus), but if you own a silver or "Space Grey" iPhone 8 Plus, you'll have to settle for a case that doesn't exactly match your new phone.

6. Atgoin shock-absorbing case for iPhone 8 Plus (transparent)

As my poor, case-free iPhone will tell you, I'm somewhat of a minimalist. After all, it's the reason I (stupidly) don't own an iPhone case to begin with.

This case from Atgoin is the one I should own—it's completely clear, so it won't really obscure the lovely color and sparkly texture of my iPhone.

The backplate is polycarbonate, which will protect your new iPhone 8 Plus from nicks, dings, and scratches. Thankfully, because its design is so basic, it won't bulk-up your pocket with a ton of weight.

With its sterling reputation among Amazon customers and its price tag of just ten bucks, you really can't go wrong here.

7. OtterBox Commuter Series case for iPhone 8 Plus (several color variants)

This heavy-duty, 2-piece iPhone 8 Plus case is perfect for someone looking for a rugged case with a boat-load of protection.

Available in several fun colors (including indigo, pink, and black), this sturdy case offers all of the heavy-duty protection one would expect from OtterBox. At around $24, it's not the most affordable case on the market, but we recommend it for active, on-the-go people who routinely put their phone in dangerous situations.

Note: Although it's not as bulky as the OtterBox case we listed for the iPhone 8, you probably won't be able to sustain a wireless charge while your iPhone 8 Plus is encased in this one.
