I recently found myself fostering four cats. I grew up having dogs, so I was of course worried for multiple reasons. Namely, the litter boxes. I'm very odor-sensitive, and especially with four of them, I couldn't even imagine the smells, scooping, and storage of all that waste...
After doing some research, I came across the Petlibro Luma self-cleaning litter box, supposedly one of the best for odor control. Petlibro is a trusted name in the pet space, one that we've even reviewed before, and I was intrigued by the claim of 97% odor reduction in a 6-hour SGS third-party lab test.
I figured there was no better way to put a smart litter box to the test than with my four fosters, so I decided to try it out.
A sleek self-cleaning litter box with seamless setup
A lot of self-cleaning litter boxes are large and obtrusive, looking more like washing machines than litter boxes. While the Luma has a large capacity, it's sleek with an open-top design and rounded corners for safety during those post-poop zooms. It's also incredibly easy to setup compared to other odor-reducing boxes that require advanced setup with window hoses or air purifiers.
Getting started was truly seamless. Once you open the packaging, find a location with a hard, even surface to place the litter box. If you have a home that features mostly carpet like I do, this might limit the possible placement locations, but it's essential for the accuracy for the weight and safety sensors. Plus, since it looks so polished and offers strong odor reduction, I don't mind having it out in my living room or even bedroom. After that, simply install 2 filters; the waste filter and carbon deodorizer. Then you just have to plug it in, download the app, and fill the basin with litter.
A built-in 3-fan airflow circulation reduces litter box odor by passing air through a dedicated activated carbon filter before release.
Daily digging becomes a thing of the past
No human wants to use a toilet that's dirty, and cats don't either. Not only do unscooped litter boxes smell, but it can also make cats more avoidant of using the bathroom, leading to health problems or accidents elsewhere. So, that leaves us cat parents to do the dirty work. Scooping the litter box is a multiple-time-a-day thing for me, and it's less than ideal.
The Luma auto-scoops as soon as your cat goes, reducing odors by trapping the waste in a lined drawer and leaving behind fresh litter with no trace of the smell. We know cats love to dig and disperse litter everywhere, usually leaving corners bare, so the Luma can also level the litter, tilting the barrel and flattening it to leave an even bed for next time.
So long, smelly litter box
The biggest benefit of a smart litter box is obviously the smell reduction. This is especially where the Luma stands out. It uses a built-in 3-fan airflow circulation in which air passes through a dedicated activated carbon filter before release. I'm so sensitive to smells that I used to have to plug my nose or turn the fan on as soon as one of my fosters went to the bathroom. Since getting the Luma, I've barely even gotten a whiff. It truly has made all the difference in being able to spend more time with my cats and less time smelling and scooping.
With the auto-scooping feature, the waste, and thus the smell, is also removed as soon as the cat is done going. The drawer for waste is large and lined, so it's truly a hands-free cleaning experience.
The Petlibro Luma is a robust smart litter box with advanced odor-reduction and smart features.
Easy app controls and health monitoring
Litter boxes can tells you a lot about your cat's health, but if you have multiple cats, it can be difficult to figure out which one you need to worry about. The Luma tracks advanced insights through the app and recognizes up to 10 cats. See how often they're using the litterbox, if they're peeing or pooping, and even if the stools are solid or loose.
In the app you can also control cleaning schedules, litter leveling, live view, camera playback, and additional usage records.
Smarter and safer than other self-cleaning litter boxes
Smart pet products can make life much easier. But with more moving parts and electrical currents, they can also make it scarier. Safety is always front of mind with the Luma, as it has weight sensors, infrared motion sensors, an AI camera, and anti-pinch protection.
You can also turn off the auto-cleaning feature and instead use the app to schedule cleaning when you see fit.
Who should buy the Petlibro Luma odor-controlling litter box?
The Luma smart litter box is a valuable tool for any cat parent. Whether you have multiple cats and appreciate the AI health insights, live in a small space where smells linger, are odor-sensitive, or would just rather spend less time scooping and more time snuggling and playing, the Luma is smart, safe, and better-smelling than alternatives.
