Phone bills are going up across major carriers, but more people are pushing back by switching to prepaid carriers. Rather than get locked into a contract and pay more for the same service every year, many have found they can keep their phone number and their coverage without the hefty monthly payment.

Ultra Mobile and Lyca Mobile are two of the most popular prepaid options right now. They both run on a major network and offer flexible plans without a contract, but they differ on international calling, price, and data in ways that could make one a much better fit than the other.

Key Similarities:

  • Both offer no-contract prepaid plans with nationwide 5G coverage
  • Both run on major networks
  • Both offer free unlimited talk and text to over 90 destinations
  • Both are compatible with eSIM and physical SIM cards
  • Both offer BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) support
  • Both offer free shipping on SIM cards

Key Differences:

  • Download Speed: Ultra Mobile: 79–357 Mbps Lyca Mobile: 70–320 Mbps
  • Ultra includes free talk/text in Mexico and Canada and roaming credits on most plans
  • Ultra runs on the T-Mobile network while Lyca is on AT&T
  • Ultra’s 24GB+ plans get a free 5GB Mexico Data Roaming Pass
  • Ultra generally has lower prices on multi-month plans
  • All Ultra Mobile plans are Mobile Hotspot compatible
  • Ultra does not have a hard cap on their unlimited data plans, but Lyca does
  • Lyca’s unlimited plans start at higher prices and require longer promos to match Ultra’s rates

International Minutes

Both Ultra Mobile and Lyca Mobile include international talk and text in their plans, but Ultra has way more built-in features for staying connected abroad.

Every Ultra plan has unlimited calling to over 90 destinations and global texting to more than 200. For destinations not on the main list, users can add international calling credits and receive a 25% bonus with each purchase. For standard 24GB plans and up, you’ll also get 5GB of high-speed data each month to use in Mexico. It's perfect for getting directions, using apps, browsing, and more without having to be connected to Wi-Fi.

One note: Ultra Mobile’s built-in roaming applies to Canada and Mexico. Travel outside North America isn't included in standard plans, but that’s still more than Lyca has to offer.

Lyca does offer unlimited talk and text to up to 100 countries and supports international roaming, but only on a pay‑as‑you‑go basis. Roaming data isn’t always included, and you may need to purchase international roaming add-ons to avoid fees. Calling rates for anywhere outside the covered list are deducted from your prepaid credit at variable rates.

While both services support international communication, Ultra has more features upfront without relying on pay‑as‑you‑go add‑ons and adds global texting to over 200 destinations, plus built-in roaming data in Mexico for select plans. Whether you’re calling abroad or traveling, Ultra takes it.

Price

Ultra Mobile and Lyca Mobile are both affordable alternatives to a standard carrier contract. Ultra's prices tend to be lower for multi-month plans, and right now, there are two promotions running that make the gap even wider.

Through June 30, Ultra's Spring Sale takes 33% off 3-month plans, with options starting at $10.67/month.

From June 1 through August 31, the Summer Sale adds a Get Every 4th Month Free offer on select single-month plans.

Buy and activate a single-month plan, renew twice, and get every 4th month free. Over a full year, that works out to 9 months paid and 3 months totally free, and the offer continues as long as you keep the plan.

Ultra Mobile has the edge when it comes to pricing, especially if you want to lock in a low rate that lasts.

Data Offerings

While both Ultra Mobile and Lyca Mobile include access to 5G and 4G LTE networks, Ultra consistently has higher download speeds.

According to broadband disclosures, Ultra’s typical download speeds range from 79 to 357 Mbps, while Lyca’s range from 70 to 320 Mbps.

Lyca’s unlimited plans include high-speed data up to 25GB, 40GB, or 60GB, depending on the plan, after which speeds are reduced.

Ultra’s Unlimited Plan includes uncapped unlimited data, though heavy data users over 35GB/month may notice slower speeds when the network is busy.

Both are strong options for heavy data users, but for those who want more predictable performance and clearly defined data limits, Ultra is the better choice.
