Buying a mattress is expensive, exhausting, and somehow always takes longer than it should. So I put it off. For a long time.

My last attempt went by the book. I read the reviews, compared foam layers, and landed on a Casper. It held up for a while, but within a couple of years I was waking up warm and stiff, and the idea of starting the research all over again felt worse than—literally—sleeping on the problem.

Now fall is here, and with longer nights ahead, I decided it's about time I invested in better sleep. I'd seen Tuft & Needle launch the Mint Luxe Plush Hybrid Mattress, and I rolled my eyes at the name. Any mattress calling itself both "Luxe" and "Plush" had a lot to prove.

But curiosity (and a sore back) won out, and three months later, I'm eating my words. Here's why I'm glad I switched.

1. It fixed what I hated about my old mattress

My biggest complaint was pressure. As a side sleeper, my shoulder and hip took the brunt of every night, and my old mattress never managed to cushion them without letting me sink. (If you want the spec-by-spec version, we've broken down how Tuft & Needle compares with Casper.)

The Mint Luxe Plush Hybrid handled that from the first night. Its top layer is T&N Flex foam, which firms up the deeper you settle, so my hips sank in just enough, then stopped—instead of falling into a total sinkhole.

The Plush version also has extra gel memory foam, which is where the cushion comes from. Tuft & Needle says Flex foam also gets 40% better airflow than standard memory foam. That tracks with the fact that I stopped kicking off the covers at 3 a.m.

2. I didn't realize how much I'd been putting up with

Turns out, the Mint Luxe Plush was the exact upgrade my bedroom has been needing.

Once the pressure was gone, the smaller stuff became obvious.

As a warm sleeper, my favorite upgrade was the consistent cool feel. The cover stays cool to the touch all night, even with a hefty comforter piled on top, so I get the cozy part of cozy season without waking up overheated.

And for anyone who shares the bed with a wiggly sleeper, the individually wrapped coils keep all tosses and turns contained.

I realized my new T&N mattress isn't a one-trick fix. The whole bed works better. That's key for these busiest last few months of the year, when a good night's sleep carries a lot of weight.

3. Switching was way less annoying than I expected

The research spiral is what kept me stuck, and the actual switch turned out to be the easy part. The mattress shipped within a week, arrived compressed in a box, and unrolled in minutes.

The risk that scared me off before is covered, too: a 100-night sleep trial, free shipping and returns, and a 10-year limited warranty.

In hindsight, I shouldn't have been so skeptical. The Tuft & Needle Original is one of Reviewed's best mattresses for a reason.

Honestly, I spent longer avoiding a new mattress than it took to get one.

The bottom line

Is Tuft & Needle worth it? For a reluctant, previously burned shopper, yes. The Mint Luxe Plush Hybrid solved the thing that bugged me most and quietly fixed a few I'd stopped noticing.

Though, if you prefer a medium-firm feel, the Mint Hybrid Mattress II keeps the coils and gel memory foam for less.
