A long time ago in a crowded movie theater far, far away, Star Wars blasted into the world and pop culture changed forever. So much so that the famous franchise’s most notable line, May the force be with you, has evolved far beyond a movie catchphrase. The uncanny phonetic similarity to May the 4th inspired Star Wars fans to create Star Wars Day. Not only is May 4 a reason to celebrate the impact George Lucas’s sci-fi bonanza left on the world, but it’s also a chance to expand your collection of Star Wars-themed toys, games and memorabilia for more affordable prices—and a great time to stream all the movies and TVs shows too. There have been 12 Star Wars movies released theatrically since 1977, many of those movies have been cited as the driving force that expanded the imaginations of countless actors, writers, directors, designers and more.

With a global following and dedicated fanbase, May the 4th is the annual celebration of all things Star Wars. Whether you’re a loyal fan or don’t know your Hutts from your Wookies, we’ve got all the essential details (and deals) on this intergalactic event.

What day is Star Wars Day?

Fans celebrate Star Wars Day on May the 4th, meaning Star Wars Day 2022 arrives tomorrow, May 4 as a nod to the classic catchphrase. Funny enough, the iconic line isn’t actually said by Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi or even Darth Vader. While Obi-Wan has the equally famous line, The force will be with you…always, the line, May the force be with you, is actually uttered by General Dodonna when Luke and the rebel alliance are going over the plans for the climactic Death Star assault at the end of the first Star Wars movie.

How to celebrate Star Wars Day

While you can’t take the day off work in honor of the fall and rise of the Jedi, there are plenty of other ways to toast Anakin, Luke and the gang. For one, you can binge watch the entire Skywalker Saga (i.e. the nine movies in the main Star Wars canon) by signing up for Disney+. The home of all movies in the Saga runs you $7.99 a month, or $2.99 a month if you’re a Hulu subscriber and add Disney+ to your plan. It’s also the home of numerous Star Wars TV series, from classics like Star Wars: Clone Wars from 2003 to the latest hits like the 2021 series, The Book of Boba Fett.

If you want to hold the power of the movies in your hand, there’s the Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray collection on sale at Best Buy for 24% off at $169.99. You can also get copies of the individual Star Wars adventures, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker on sale at Amazon for 51% off at $12.99 on Blu-Ray and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story also on sale at Amazon for $17.99 in 4K thanks to a 55% discount.

The Star Wars universe lives on through video games you can play on the same day too. If you’re an Xbox gamer, you can take to space for tense dogfights in Star Wars: Squadrons which is available in digital code for Xbox One at GameStop for $9.99 thanks to a whopping 75% discount. GameStop also gives you the chance to swing a lightsaber with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, also on sale for $9.99 in digital code form for Xbox users. You can even get two classic Star Wars games remastered for the Nintendo Switch with the Star Wars Racer and Republic Commando Combo at GameStop for $19.99 thanks to a $10 price cut.

How to watch Star Wars movies

It’s crazy to think that it’s been nearly ten years since the House of Mouse bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion, bringing two of the biggest pop culture entities together for a new era. That new era has made watching the Star Wars movies easier than ever. Disney+ is home to all 11 theatrically-released live-action Star Wars movies, from 1977’s original Star Wars (or Episode IV: A New Hope if you’re being canonical about it) all the way to 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. It even has the two spin-off adventures under the A Star Wars Story banner: 2016’s Rogue One chronicling the capture of the Death Star plans and 2018’s Solo, which tells how Han Solo first met Chewie, Lando and the Millenium Falcon.

How to watch Star Wars shows

Lucasfilm has commissioned various Star Wars live action and animated TV series over the years to expand the Star Wars universe beyond movie theaters. Like the films, these shows are available on Disney+ and vary in style. There’s Dave Filoni’s 2014 animated hit Star Wars: Rebels, which follows a scrappy starship crew evading and battling the Empire post-_Revenge of the Sith_. Then there’s Jon Favreau’s recent live-action smash The Mandalorian, telling the story of a lone bounty hunter and his adventures with the adorable Baby Yoda. There are also documentaries that cover famous characters and the making of the original trilogy, plus Lego Star Wars animated specials all on Disney+!
