I found my favorite pair of bike shorts in Kim Kardashian's latest Skims collection

They're exactly what I want to live in this summer.

Earlier this year, our emerging categories writer Sara Hendricks tested out Kim Kardashian's Skims shapewear. She ranked them from best to worst, and found a few pieces she really loved (looking at you, molded bra!). Another one of our writers, Patrice Williams, even put Skims up against Spanx, the OG shapewear brand, and found it to be pretty comparable (which is no minor feat).

I thought the Skims brand was cool (so popular! so cult-y!) but I didn't buy any of it for myself at first. Why? Not only have I never worn shapewear, but I have literally nothing in common with Mrs. West besides the color of our eyes—I don't have my own reality show, I've never worn a see-through dress to a public event, and I certainly don't have billions of dollars in my bank account.

Basically my mindset was, as my therapist would say, "good for them, not good for me." I.e. Skims might be winning the hearts of thousands of women but it just wasn't for me. Or at least that's what I thought until I was given the chance to try out the latest line of Skims shapewear, the Smoothing collection, which just came out at the end of June.

To be frank, I didn't think I would like it since I don't exactly have the same taste in clothes as Kim K. (see above note about transparent dress). But, after receiving my bike shorts and matching bralette in the mail last week, I am officially a Kardashian convert.

Below is my review of the latest release from Skims—which includes seven styles from bodysuits to tees—and whether or not the "smoothing" shapewear is worth investing in this summer.

What is Skims?

Skims is the shapewear brand founded by Kim Kardashian last year that has become famous for its size-inclusive pieces that fit and flatter every body type and skin color. Offering everything from sculpting shorts to sleek bodysuits, Skims promises that, "Designed to smooth, enhance, lift and tone - each piece has a solution for every body."

The new Smoothing collection is made up of seven styles: T-shirt, tank top, thong bodysuit, bralette, brief, thong, and shorts. According to Skims, the Smoothing pieces are meant to be more lightweight yet still supportive—i.e. perfect for wearing on their own or layering underneath something else.

This set is made for every body type.

I ordered the Smoothing Short and the Smoothing Bralette, both in a size small and both in cocoa. The entire Smoothing collection comes in three colors (sienna, cocoa, and onyx) and is available in regular sizes (starting with XXS) and plus sizes (all the way up to 4X). Speaking of sizes, I found that the shorts fit surprisingly well—as someone who has always been self-conscious about her thighs, I have trouble finding shorts that fit my waist without cutting into my legs but these somehow managed to pass the test.

However, the bralette felt pretty constrictive, which is odd considering I'm someone with a smaller chest who religiously wears a small without any issues. The Skims bralette felt like I was going to tear it trying to stretch it over my head. That being said, though, once it was on, it did feel supportive and pretty comfortable, albeit a little snugger than I would typically like. I liked that the straps were adjustable, at least, so you can somewhat customize the fit.

Is the Skims Smoothing shapewear good quality?

Despite my tiny issue with the sizing of the bralette, I can attest that the material of the new Skims shapewear is very high quality. It's thick enough that it feels durable and well-made yet lightweight enough that it feels breathable instead of suffocating. Plus, it's buttery soft against your skin—almost like a pair of Lululemon Align leggings (if you own these, you know what I'm talking about!).

One of the other things I really love about the Skims Smoothing line is that the pieces are completely seamless. There is nothing worse than an itchy or ill-placed seam (hello, camel-toe) and both the bralette and shorts have none of that. The fabric also manages to be compressive in the right spots without being super tight and the shorts have a double-layer high waistband that feels sturdy not flimsy like some cheaper shorts tend to be.

Is the Skims Smoothing shapewear worth buying?

You can mix and match all of the pieces or wear them as a set.

Unpopular opinion... but it depends. Are you looking for inexpensive loungewear or a bra that you can also wear for working out? Then you might want to move along. At $34 for the bralette and $32 for the shorts, Skims is hardly a "splurge" but it is more expensive than what you might snag at Forever 21 or T.J. Maxx. And as I mentioned, the bralette didn't provide the kind of support you'd need for high-intensity exercise—it's best for just wearing around the house.

On the other hand, I'm obsessed with the shorts—they're incredibly comfortable and flattering at the same time, and smooth out any problem areas you (think) you have on your thighs. They also did feel compressing—but not too tight—and supportive, so I'd feel comfortable wearing these out in public without anything over top. And despite the fact that the bralette isn't my favorite, I really like the whole matching set together.

Sara, who felt like much of the original Skims shapewear was a little expensive for what it was, agrees. "Shapewear is something that's probably worth spending a little extra money on, and Skims seems like it's on par with (or maybe even cheaper than) something like Spanx, so this line of shapewear may be the way to go if you're considering buying Skims," she says.

Where to buy Skims shapewear

While you can buy Skims directly from the brand's website (and get free shipping on any order over $75), you can now also find select styles at Nordstrom. However, the new Smoothing collection is only available on Skims.com for now. Nordstrom currently stocks pieces from past lines, including the sculpting shorts and the ever-popular waist trainer.
