Let me say this right now: I’m not the camping type of person. I prefer to lounge, luxuriate, and generally do anything that doesn’t require much physical effort, like sitting in my personal sauna. But when a work opportunity popped up last year to camp in the Rockies and climb a via ferrata in Colorado, I said why not. My package arrived about two days before my camping trip and it was clear I had a winner. Putting them on was like slipping into butter and it’s some of the softest material I’ve ever felt. The inside is also lined with fleece, which would hopefully keep me cozy and warm while camping. I tried my new garments on and the set was fitted, without being restrictive. But the true test would come when I slept in a tent in 35-degree weather.
When we arrived at the campsite, I already had my thermals on under a pair of hiking pants. Because the thermals have such a tight fit, they were easy to layer, which I hear is key to hiking—but it’s also the key to any good fashion moment. After successfully climbing the mountains, I took the hiking pants off to settle in for the night as I was actually starting to get warm, or at least my legs did. I still kept a zip-up hoodie over the thermal top. The thermal was working its magic and keeping me warm without feeling overheated, no extra layers required.
As it got later and darker, I slid into my tent and zipped up my sleeping bag. I was in for a long night. Not because of the cold (thanks thermals!) or the fact I was sleeping on the hard ground, but what if a bear or whatever else lives in the Rockies decided to come knocking on my tent door? I couldn’t sleep.
But possible danger and mauling aside, at least I was comfortable thanks to the poly-spandex material that felt like a warm, second skin. And the elastic band, which is slightly high waisted, stayed in place without feeling restrictive or digging into my skin.
While camping under the stars wasn’t my fave (bears!), the thermals still got a 10/10 and I was at least able to sleep in style.
How to wear the thermal set outside of camping
These thermals are stylish enough to wear even when I'm not camping.
Despite no desire to ever camp again, I still rock the thermals in my day to day life. In addition to being cozy and warm, the material is perfect for traveling. I can bunch them up in a carry-on and not have to worry about wrinkles. Also, the thermals dry super fast. I refuse to ever pay for expensive hotel laundry, so these are perfect if you need to wash them and hang them to dry in a makeshift bathtub laundromat.
I’ve worn the thermals everywhere from Seattle to Toronto to Finland. Since they were great for layering under hiking pants, they also work perfectly under a skirt, dress, or worn with a blazer. The bright red provides a nice pop of color, too.

While my travel life has been nonexistent in 2020, I still wear the thermals for grocery store runs and early morning walks. I also plan to buy another pair in another fun color to lounge around in.
