The two factions that comprise the Micro Four Thirds standard, Olympus and Panasonic, have developed different and distinct families of cameras. While Olympus's PEN and OM-D cameras evoke the firm's own classic film cameras, Panasonic has seemed happy enough to stick to modern styling.
In that way, Panasonic's gone and turned everything upside-down with their GX7. Although it's not a direct follow-up to the GX1, there's no doubt that this compact, premium camera has its sights set high. We have it on good authority that the GX7 was designed to be the OM-D killer. Armed with a new 16-megapixel sensor, high-quality EVF and blazingly fast autofocus, the GX7 certainly seems like it has the right stuff.
So far, we have no major complaints. Shooting with the GX7 proved to be a breeze. We were particularly impressed with the comfortable, ergonomic grip. This Lumix's handling is much nicer than what we've seen on some of the more recent PENs, and we love the new retro-ish design. The control layout, while a little cramped, puts controls right where they should be. We got some hands-on time with the GX7 and the recently refreshed 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit zoom, which is way smaller than its predecessor and, thankfully, of a much higher build quality.
We're reserving judgement for our full review, but until we're done analyzing Panasonic's latest M43 camera, enjoy 24 high resolution sample photos from the GX7.
