LG just announced the addition of two new ultra high definition TVs to its 2013 lineup: the LA9650 series. The newcomers will hit American shelves this month in 55- ($3,499) and 65-inch ($4,999) sizes.
While those price tags may seem big and scary to some, they are considerably lower than asking prices for LG's LA9700 UHD series, which cost as much as $16,999. The difference may involve the LA9700 series' full-array LED design vs. the LA9650s' edge-lit variety.
LG hopes to wow shoppers with the LA9650's edge-lit local dimming, the company's smart platform, 3D tech, and fluid features like gesture and voice control via its Magic Remote. The televisions will also offer sharing features to incorporate other smart devices, and the company's TRU-ULTRA HD Engine, which upscales regular HD content to fit a UHD panel. And that brings up a notable point: Manufacturers are pushing UHD televisions, but there's a huge hole where UHD content should be. Upscaling attempts to address this through algorithms that manipulate HD signals. Many manufacturers offer upscaling features, but we withhold judgment until we see it in action—in a lab.
