How we tested

The protective 100% polycarbonate hard shell is designed to resist impact and dents better than aluminum shells, which are heavier and pricier. The bags' interior design elements—a divider, X-straps, and three pockets—also secured my items in place.

The set is easy to maneuver

Agile luggage matters most when you're racing to catch a flight, and this Coolife set handles well. The Coolife's rotating wheels are noticeably smoother and quieter than my Samsonite's, gliding effortlessly across most surfaces. When my tween rolled it through the parking lot, she exclaimed, "Whoa! It's so smooth. Can I have it?"

Adding to the mobility, the ergonomic design includes two flexible, comfortable carry handles. The extendable handle easily adjusts to three heights. It wiggles a bit, especially on the carry-on, but that's normal—telescoping luggage handles are designed to wobble so they don't snap.

The carry-on's convenient, lockable front swing pocket is a game-changer for business trips. It offers easy access to your laptop (up to 17 inches) and features six pockets in all. Space is tight, but I was able to fit several slim items: a laptop, tablet, magazine, charger, and sleep mask.

The main compartment of each bag offers even more organization, including a zip divider and three slim pockets (one mesh, two waterproof). The interior zippers are smooth, strong, and easy to close. The bags are also expandable.

What we don't like

The exterior isn't scratch-proof

Like most polycarbonate hardshells, this set is scratch-resistant, but not scratch-proof.

Letting the loosely stacked suitcases jostle around in my trunk for eight hours left zero marks, but a brief brush with wicker left multiple white scratches on the smaller suitcase. I tried removing the marks with my fingernail, a wet, soapy cloth, a Magic Eraser, and eventually nail polish remover, hoping they were paint transfer rather than scratches, but they didn't budge.

The interior lacks a few adjustable features

Each bag offers good organization with a zipper divider and three pockets, but there's room for improvement. The X-straps help hold items in place but aren't adjustable; stretchy elastic or a slide adjuster would improve functionality. And while there are multiple pockets, they're tight and don't hold much.

The carry-on size may require checking

Like many so-called carry-on bags available today, the full dimensions of the small Coolife bag (22 x 14.9 x 10 inches) slightly exceed the standard carry-on size (22 x 14 x 9 inches) set by most international carriers—and that's before factoring in the expansion feature. Depending on the airline, you may be asked to check both bags, so confirm sizing with the carrier before you travel. Note: The small bag is referred to as a 20-inch bag because the industry standard is to reference its shell height without wheels (20 inches) rather than its full height with wheels and handle (22 inches).
