The Frigidaire Affinity FASE7073LA has some high-end features for a mid-range price, but our testing showed that sometimes you get what you pay for. Though the allergen and sanitary cycles disappointed, the washer was quick to get clothes clean and did a solid job on everyday cycles. You can find this washer online for around $600, which makes it a great value.

The Bosch WFVC6450UC has a high-end fit and finish, uses very little energy and did a great job lifting stains on most cycles. However, it also struggled to remove debris and clean delicates.

The Frigidaire FRFW3700LW is far from fancy, but it gets the job done for a lot less money than the competition.

Found for under $700, the GE GFDN240ELWW had effective drying performance but sub-par temperature control, often getting as warm as 180 degrees on a normal cycle. Its customizable features are definitely impressive, but can't be used on all cycles.

The corporate cousin of the Whirlpool Cabrio, Maytag's Bravos X dryer is easy to use, effective and relatively inexpensive.

If you want a competent and attractive dryer and have money to spend, the LG DLEX3885W is your choice.

The Bosch WTVC5330US Dryer does a very good—if sometimes uneven—job drying clothes.
