As a beauty writer, I believe that perfumes are the desserts of grooming routines. Similar to whatever sweet treat your heart desires, they’re not a necessity but an optional luxury that you won’t regret indulging in. Never in my wildest dreams did I think a brand could create a perfume that smells like an actual dessert, but Glasshouse Fragrances set its sights on just that with its A Tahaa Affair Devotion Perfume .

When the brand sent me an email announcing that its full-size personal fragrance collection would make its stateside debut by way of Australia, I was intrigued by the concept of a scent brand born on the other side of the world, as many of the perfumes that sit on my shelf come from French and Italian fashion houses. But I fell even more in love with the brand after A Tahaa Affair Devotion Perfume landed on my doorstep. After all, it smells just like butterscotch. But whether I’d suggest you buy it is another matter.

A Tahaa Affair Devotion Perfume features notes of sweet sugar cane, coconut water, sea salt, and more.

Glasshouse Fragrances is an Australian-based fragrance brand that specializes in the creation of both personal and home fragrances. The brand’s products are sold at retailers such as Amazon, Neiman Marcus, LookFantastic, and Verishop.

It made its first stateside introduction with the launch of its mini personal scents, candles, and diffusers in June of 2021. Glasshouse Fragrances has also tapped into the category of body care with a collection consisting of hand gels, hand sanitizers, hand creams, body bars, body lotions, and shower gels. The body care collection was also part of its summer 2021 debut.

Fast-forward seven months and Glasshouse Fragrances went out to make another splash in the fragrance space with the January 2022 launch of its full-size Eau De Parfum collection. Each of the perfume’s scents are based on the aromas of the brand’s candle counterparts. A Tahaa Affair Devotion is one of four perfumes in the lineup, alongside Forever Florence, Midnight in Milan, and Kyoto in Bloom. Each perfume comes in two sizes: 1.7 ounces and 3.4 ounces.

What is A Tahaa Affair Devotion Perfume?

Glasshouse Fragrances claims that A Tahaa Affair Devotion is a sweet-smelling “gourmand floral fragrance.” Per the brand’s description of the perfume, it features top notes of “sweet sugar cane, coconut water, and sea salt,” followed by middle notes of “jasmine sambac, vanilla orchid, Polynesian hibiscus, and Tahitian foliage.” The olfactory experience is said to conclude with base notes of “caramel butterscotch, black amber, sun-dried driftwood, and cedarwood.” When it comes to its lasting power on the skin, Nicole Eckels, founder and CEO of Glasshouse Fragrances, purports that all of the perfumes are “long-lasting and daringly potent.”

What I like about Glasshouse Fragrances’ A Tahaa Affair Devotion Perfume

It’s reminiscent of sweet shops

A Tahaa Affair Devotion has a warm, inviting butterscotch smell that could easily compete with the aroma of my early morning coffee, in terms of its perk-me-up abilities. I’m not really a morning person, but a whiff of this fragrance at the beginning of each day gets me moving—in addition to getting my caffeine fix, of course. The scent also pulls my brain back to the memories of those days when I visited old-school candy shops as a kid. You know, those standalone stores that are typically painted all-white, have black-and-white checkered floors, and contain counters full of candy of all kinds? This perfume’s aroma conjures memories of walking into one of these shops just as a newly made batch of candy emerged from the oven. In my book, the ability for scents to entice your mind to replay old, happy memories is always a plus.

What I don’t like about Glasshouse Fragrances’ A Tahaa Affair Devotion Perfume

It doesn’t last long

I had really high hopes for this scent—probably because the other perfumes I own—such as Glossier You, a long-standing fave—have a staying power of between five and eight hours. This fragrance, on the other hand, lingered on my skin for a maximum of three hours.

It’s not a good value

At $100 for 1.7 ounces, I expect the scent to last beyond breakfast, especially because I typically spray perfume on both of my wrists, on my neck, and create a perfume cloud to step into so that the scent can just fall all over my body. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in love with the smell—but not enough to shell out $100 for it. Ultimately, the fragrance’s potency (or lack thereof) and high price tag are deal-breakers for me.

Yes, if it’s in the budget—and you don’t mind reapplying

Despite my disappointment in the longevity vis a vis the price, I believe that anyone with a sweet tooth and an enthusiasm for perfume should give this scent a chance because it’s not your run-of-the-mill floral fragrance. If you don’t fall in the perfume-curious camp, then I would stay away from this scent because of its distinctly strong smell.

However, I don’t think the $100 price tag for a 1.7-ounce bottle is justifiable. If you really want to give it a try, I suggest you consider the trial-sized 0.5-ounce. bottle, which retails for $30. This way, you can shell out less cash to give it a go—and carry the travel-friendly bottle with you to refresh the scent. Sure, you’ll go through it faster by applying it more than once a day, but at least you’ll get the sweet aroma all day long.
