Image Quality

Section 2 Text

The Nikon J1 has a considerably larger sensor than most point-and-shoots, but it’s barely more than half the size of the NEX-C3’s APS-C sensor. That in mind, it’s no surprise that the C3 offers better image quality. The J1 has respectable color and resolution scores, but noise and especially dynamic range fall short of the C3. The C3 can also produce a much more shallow depth-of-field effect, which looks more “pro” than the J1’s flatter images.

Winner: Sony NEX-C3

Design & User Experience

Section 3 Text

One of our team members said that handling the Nikon J1 was “like holding a bar of soap.” The C3 wasn’t great either, but at least it had a grip and semi-textured surface. That said, the J1 is actually small enough to fit into a coat pocket, which is a huge advantage. Both offer straightforward user interfaces and a moderate amount of control for more experienced users, though entry-level users are clearly the target audiences. Both cameras are quick, but the J1 is faster.

Winner: Sony for handling, Nikon for interface

Section 4 Title

Conclusion

Section 4 Text

The NEX-C3 takes better pictures and handles better than the J1. The user experience is a near tie, and by current street prices, the J1 is about $50 more expensive. We’re siding with the NEX-C3 here. It's bulky, but even if you're after a truly compact system, we’re not sure that the J1 is the best choice either.

Overall Winner: Sony NEX-C3
